Billionaires Michael and Susan Dell pledged $6.25 billion Tuesday to provide 25 million children under 10 an incentive to claim the new investment accounts for children created as part of President Donald Trump's tax and spending legislation. The historic gift has little precedent, with few single charitable commitments in the past 25 years exceeding $1 billion, much less multiple billions. Announced on Giving Tuesday, the Dells believe it is the largest single private commitment made to U.S. children.

Some actual responsible philanthropy by a tech gazillionaire. Bill Gates and Laurene Powell Jobs, please take note.

Very generous. I do wish someone with a working knowledge of both investment banking and THIS particular legislation would give a thorough explanation of these accounts, the withdrawal options post 18, and all the tax and penalty implications. I know the basics, as does every two bit hack writer for every bird cage liner, but a real authority would I think be of great benefit.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced an end to the delays caused by health insurance prior authorizations. During Tuesday's televised White House cabinet meeting, Kennedy said, "We convened the insurance carriers representing 280 million Americans and got them to agree -- most of them by January of 2026, two months from now -- to remove prior authorizations for all procedures we want them removed from." "And that means that American patients at the point of care will be able to get an answer immediately," he added.

In September the U.S. Justice Department Civil Rights Division filed federal lawsuits against six states for failure to produce their statewide voter registration lists upon request . . . As the Globe said at the time, "That the DOJ is hauling California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania into court for hiding their voter rolls is monumental, and specifically the accountability Americans have been clamoring for." Today the Justice Department did it again, but filed Federal lawsuits against six additional states -- Delaware, Maryland, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington -- for failure to produce their statewide voter lists upon request.

Instead, many Americans in the tech industry have been left disillusioned as they face mass layoffs and chronic unemployment -- a crisis they say stems from an addiction to cheap foreign labor pipelines that are made accessible through programs like H-1B and touted by companies as a way to hire the "best and brightest."

The Biden Administration created a terrorism exemption for Afghan refugees allowing hundreds of low-level "civil servants" from the Taliban government to resettle in the United States in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal and evacuation from the country. . . . The exemptions were for Afghans who had worked as "civil servants" under the Taliban (both before 9/11 and after August 2021), as well as for Afghans who "supported U.S. military interests" such as participation in resistance movements against the Taliban or the Soviet Army and for Afghans "who provided only certain limited material support to the Taliban or other designated terrorist organizations."

The three-judge panel unanimously upheld a lower court's disqualification order that found Habba's appointment was non-compliant with a 1998 law governing federal vacancies. "It is apparent that the current administration has been frustrated by some of the legal and political barriers to getting its appointees in place," senior US Circuit Judge Michael D. Fisher wrote in a 32-page ruling.

For as little as $1, you can dim the sun — just a tiny bit — to save the world from climate change. At least, that’s the promise sold by a California start-up called Make Sunsets. Your dollar will pay for founder Luke Iseman to drive a Winnebago RV into the hills half an hour outside Saratoga, California, to release a balloon loaded with sulfur dioxide, an air pollutant normally spewed by volcanic eruptions. He and his 1,000 paying customers hope the balloon will burst in the stratosphere, releasing particles that will block sunlight and cool the planet. On-scene surveillance showed that not all of the 11 crew members were killed. One or two men were seen moving in the water.
