Liberal Journalist Melts Down Hearing
the National Anthem in Nation's Capital

A liberal columnist complained Thursday about hearing the American national anthem in Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. Jamie Stiehm, who has contributed to several corporate media outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, wrote for The Capital Times on Thursday that though the “Star-Spangled Banner” might be appropriate for “ballparks and stadiums,” it is “dissonant” to play before a classical music concert in today’s political climate. Stiehm said that classical music transcends international boundaries, but the national anthem pulls the arts back into the orbit of President Donald Trump’s influence. Here we go again. Playing the national anthem in our nation's capital is akin to the Nuremberg rallies in Nazi Germany. Please, all of you liberals who hate this country please move to Cuba, Venezuela, or North Korea. I'm sure that they will welcome you with open arms.

How tiresome. Years ago, I attended a Van Cliburn piano recital. His first piece (with which he started every concert) was the "Star Spangled Banner." Before the "Trump is a Nazi" hysteria, no one thought a thing about it. As an aside, I find it hard to believe that a surviver of Nazi Germany would be attending anything at the Kennedy Center. Nazi Germany was defeated 80 years ago, so anyone old enough to remember times under Hitler (and remember how bad they were) has to be pushing 90. People that old seldom go out, just coincidently sit next to reporters and opine about the bad old Nazis.

Please inform Jamie that our national anthem is not titled "Our Sports Venue Anthem" Betting she'd have no problem with "La Bayamesa", "Gloria al Bravo Pueblo", or "Milli Surood" playing anytime or anywhere in the country. She'd probably LOVE it.

Playing the National Anthem before each performance is, to me, a small gesture of gratitude toward those who planned, constructed, maintain.... and pay for.... the Kennedy Center. Without the American Taxpayers, the Kennedy Center would not exist. Anyone who complains about hearing the National Anthem should not enter the grounds of the building.

I agree with Jamie Stiehm that our national anthem is dissonant because of the music it was set to. I far prefer “America” or “America the Beautiful.” But, I think her wanting it be confined to “ballparks and stadiums” is snobbery. Perhaps she got her panties in a twist is because she associates it with President Trump.

Last week a radio host in Salt Lake City asked me a question I didn’t expect. We’d been talking about my “jobs Americans won’t do” article, which kind of kicked the anthill, and everything stayed within the usual lanes: illegal immigration, wages, hiring incentives, hollowed-out towns. Then, at the very end, he asked the only question that really matters: “So how do we fix it?” Not describe it or rant about it. Fix it. My answer, essentially, was, "It's complicated." There isn’t a bumper-sticker answer. And there certainly isn’t a partisan one. The problem goes much deeper than illegal immigration, though illegal immigration made it far worse. The truth is brutal:

As of midday today, about 1,000 new comments have been posted on the federal portal at Regulations.gov, bringing the total to over 12,000. The proposed rule, titled “Weighted Selection Process for Registrants and Petitioners Seeking to File Cap-Subject H-1B Petitions”, would replace the current random lottery for 85,000 annual H-1B visas with a system that gives priority to higher-wage positions. Registrations for unique beneficiaries would be entered into a weighted selection pool based on wage levels, with the highest-wage positions having the greatest odds of selection.

He noted that some form of the White House press pool goes back to the White House of President James Garfield, and was more

Italy has long been one of Europe’s strongest defenders of religious freedom despite the influence of the Vatican. But now, the country is poised to outlaw the use of traditional Islamic attire like burqas, a move the government says will strengthen its tradition of religious liberty by requiring all faiths to operate with “full transparency” and within the limits of Italian law. The proposed law, which is set to be debated in Italy’s parliament before the end of this year, would ban “religiously motivated garments that obscure identity or impose non-transparent forms of [religious] affiliation,” according to a draft of the proposal published in the Italian media.

It ain’t so much the things we don’t know that — Mark Twain (attributed) What’s the one thing everyone knows about capitalism? Why, that it started out as a mean, nasty tool of greedy industrialists, of course. “The Industrial Revolution,” we all learned, was a terrible Moloch that devoured children, put profits before people, and, though it made great fortunes (or, perhaps, partly because it made great fortunes), was a wicked development. The Industrial Revolution, we’ve all been taught, was the original sin of capitalism, necessary, perhaps, to prime the engine of economic progress, but lamentable nevertheless.

Originally subpoenaed in August, the Clintons asked their lawyer to request that the committee accept written statements rather than require them to sit for live depositions. Their attorney, David Kendall, claimed that written answers would be the “most efficient and equitable” approach. Comer shot that down.
