Convenience store giant 7-Eleven has found itself the target of social media outrage after a story about how it treated one of its employees was made public.
Stephanie Dilyard worked at one 7-Eleven store in Oklahoma City when she was given a counterfeit $100 bill from a customer. Dilyard refused to accept it and the man attacked her, tried to strangle Dilyard for doing her job.
Unfortunately for that man, later identified as Kenneth Thompson, Dilyard was armed, and she shot him.
In response, 7-Eleven fired Dilyard from her job.

Oklahoma is a good place. Not everyone is quivering cowards. She will get a better job soon. They may even contact her.

The entire article tries to make it sound like she killed him. You have to follow a link to a local story to learn that the attacker fled to a nearby street and called 911. Probably wasn't dead.

I will never go to a 7-11 again. I carry and I want the employees in a store to do the same.

Three 7-11 stores have closed in my location in the last year. I don't understand why. They all seemed to be busy most of the time, and they weren't located in bad areas. Maybe there were too many of the stores in the area. Walgreens had a similar problem here. A Walgreens suddenly started to appear on almost every open lot. Now there is just one.

The question I have is this, was she fired by 7-Eleven? Or, by a franchise owner?

So 7-11 claims she was fired for using her own gun. Did 7-11 provide her with a gun and she shoukd have used that gun instead of her own. Did the store or owner provide security for the women. And. Had she accepted the counterfeit money would she have been fired for doing so .
I think the 7-11 store needs to do a lot of explaining.

A single-parent mom working the graveyard shift at a 7-11, probably for not much more than minimum wage. And this is her reward. Here's hoping she lands a better job in the very near future.

I get the premise for 7-11's stance. The Japanese are quite rule intensive...when it is for mere foreigners.
If they didn't supply security, then they need to clam up.

Even if she did break corporate policy, 7-11 is insane for firing her.
The fallout potential is huge - a possible boycott of stores (conservatives are getting the hang of boycotting), not to mention tons of bad press. Would not be surprised if some corporate VP holds a press conference offering her to be reinstated. That being said, I can see her getting multiple (and better) job offers in the near term. President Trump may even offer her a job at one of his companies - he loves to highlight liberal stupidity.

FTA - "Despite losing her job, Dilyard remained certain she did the right thing."
She did. But not clear if she had dispatched the attacker or not.

I'm not sure why they had a woman working alone in a 7-11 on the night shift. No wonder she had her own gun. 7-11 needs to bite the bullet and offer her the job back. Hopefully she won't take it, the bad guy likely has friends in the area, but like many have said here, she's been offered a better job elsewhere.

Frankly, this should be a warning to all 7-11 Employees. 7-11 is not an employer worth working for.

Clearly, 7-11 wants its employees to go ahead and accept counterfeit money.

This is nothing new. 7-11 8has been doing this for at least 40 years. Any employee who resists a robber, especially when armed, is guaranteed to be fired.

All Quickie-Marts should have a conspicuous sign which says "Clerk May Be Armed" whether they are or not.

# 16 - years ago my son, while in college, worked at a nearby 7-11. One night a customer walked in, picked up a 6 pack of beer and walked out. 7-11 told him to ignore it and let people steal what they wanted. He started keeping cans of soup behind the counter and when someone was walking out with something they hadn't paid for, he threw soup cans at them. I sure it was just for show, he said he never hit anyone, but he felt better about the situation.

Re: #16 - I can vouch for 7-11's policy within your stated timeline, at least since I was working the streets as a motorcycle cop back during Reagan's first term.

Now that this news is out there, it should be nearly impossible for any 7-11 to hire anyone because everyone knows a convenience store is a magnet for crime and if they need to defend themselves the company does not have their back.
