If there’s any good that’s come from the government shutdown, it’s exposing all the fraud being committed to exploit the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. To be sure, there are millions of needy Americans who were hurting from being deprived of SNAP as they tried to support children and keep their families from going hungry. This is not about them. This is about the other people — the individuals who dip into this program unjustly at the expense of the taxpayer. Just the News reported that Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Steven Vaden has indicated his agency is engaging in data collection relating to SNAP across several states

Even if you have illegally accumulated benefits from 6 states, how do you amass $50,000 accrued? How much is the normal monthly payment on the EBT card? All these programs need to have cross-checks, particularly between states and counties, to protect the taxpayers.

I was visiting my daughter at University of Boulder for graduation. She was walking around filling her cart with party food. A lot of chips. I asked what she was doing. She said she had money on her card to spend. Turns out it was an EBT card. I asked how she got it. She said the university runs the financials on students. They get EBT automatically. Most students have them!

This is nothing new. After Katrina 20 years ago, thousands of people were discovered collecting SNAP benefits in both Louisiana and Texas, and some in California on top of that. The states did nothing, pretending that the fraud involved was under their arbitrary threshold. I know elderly people who have a real need. They barely get enough SNAP to buy a gallon of milk every week. The Dept of Ag needs to remind recipients that the S stands for supplemental, not a way of life.

RE #7: I am 100% disabled thanks to a bad fall. I applied for SNAP and they offered me a paltry $23/month. It wasn't worth all of the paperwork and hassle to accept it so I let it lapse. I think that was their plan all along.

Can you imagine the fraud in the aca? And the dems just wanted trillions thrown at it and call it a day. EVERY PROGRAM needs to be reviewed and applicants need to reapply. I have to decide if I can afford steaks for a special occasion and these jockos are eating high on the hog. This is why they can afford cars, and nails, and hair extensions, and expensive clothes, and drugs and booze and on and on. This needs to stop. Give the money found to seniors under a certain income. Or disabled, or veterans in need etc. Too many LaQuidas and their brood.

Once someone discovers the weak spot in the system, the news spreads fast and everyone is doing it. In our Katrina shelter one woman had two social security numbers and got two FEMA packets in the mail. The way I caught it was a very unusual first name. When she was adopted by a step-father as a child they got a new social with her new last name.

I presume if someone is 100% disabled then you are receiving Social Security Disability. And of course, SS started out as a retirement program and then morphed into disability. Federal programs start out small or temporary like WIC (to promote breastfeeding back in 1972) and then they just keep growing and growing.... And if I hear one more time about single mothers having to use SNAP for their children, well, these single mothers are not widows or divorcees as was the norm fifty years ago but a single woman who chose to get pregnant. If you cannot afford the child, don't get pregnant.

A federal magistrate judge on Monday criticized federal prosecutors when ordering that they turn over grand jury evidence to the defense team representing indicted former FBI Director James Comey, who faces charges of perjury and obstruction of a congressional investigation. Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick said interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan made two statements to grand jurors that could be “fundamental misstatements of the law,” The Hill reported. “The Court recognizes that the relief sought by the defense is rarely granted,” Fitzpatrick said in the opinion. “However, the record points to a disturbing pattern of profound investigative missteps, missteps that led an FBI agent and a prosecutor to

The Supreme Court agreed to review an effort by the Trump administration to limit asylum processing claims from immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in an order issued Thursday. The key issue in the case, Noem v. Al Otro Lado, is over what constitutes "arrival in the United States" within the meaning of federal immigration law. The law provides that an alien who "arrives" may apply for asylum and must be inspected by an immigration officer. The legal question, however, is over whether an immigrant "arrives" to begin the process for the asylum claim when meeting immigration officers on the U.S. side of the border or while still on

The late William F. Buckley, Jr. must be credited as one of the people who established modern conservatism in the United States. He had a weather eye for what or who could help or hurt the movement. In the early 1960s, Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, labeled former president Dwight Eisenhower, former secretary of state George C. Marshall, and many other leading Republicans as communists. He, and the Birch Society, claimed that every federal agency had been taken over by the communists. After many debates and much correspondence with Welch, Buckley led a movement to expel Welch and the John Birch Society from the conservative movement

In a memo to staff on October 30, Avelo Airlines’ head of flight operations Scott Hall painted a rosy, if defensive, picture of the company’s future. Avelo’s financial strategy was working, he said. The company had a big contract from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to do charter deportation flights, and despite some bumps, the future was bright. They had just hired more pilots and couldn’t buy aircraft fast enough to keep pace with demand. Sure, shutting down their entire West Coast operation looked bad, but it was good, actually, a long-planned move toward efficiency that had nothing to do with the “outrage mob” boycotting Avelo for its association with ICE.

Immigrants detained in facilities across the U.S. would be able to contact their lawyers and families under legislation filed by a group of congressional Democrats. The Restoring Access to Detainees Act affects immigrants who are placed in Customs and Border Protection or Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. Sponsors of the legislation said it follows months of “credible reporting” that ICE and CBP have prevented detainees from contacting family members or legal representatives. “The Trump administration’s practice of snatching people off the street and denying them access to lawyers or calls to family is cruel, unnecessary, and puts U.S. citizens and lawfully present immigrants at risk of wrongful detention and deportation,”
