The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has elected Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City as its new president, signaling conservative continuity with a pastoral approach. However, Coakley criticizes Trump-era mass deportations, urging humane immigration policies and pathways to citizenship. With millions of Catholic immigrants potentially in the crosshairs and the Church’s teachings on human dignity clashing with hardline policies, Coakley’s past statements are already drawing scrutiny – and offering clues about what’s ahead.

The Catholic Church needs to pay taxes so they have some skin in the game regarding their opinion regarding the government paying for free stuff with other people's money. I'm saying this as a 6-decade Catholic.

Trump is being humane. He could have been feeding them to the alligators or "dropping them off" with flights to their home countries. Ask this bishop to try to set up shop in Pyongyang or Tehran.

This country has humane immigration policies. We always have. Enter through a legal port of entry or you are breaking our laws.
This self-righteous, sanctimonious hypocrite, who should be sending missionaries - from his flock, funded by his church - to these war-torn countries to transform them in the name of Jesus Christ. Instead, he is using his position "in Christ" to elevate himself and claim that lawlessness is biblically justifiable.

Let's not forget the main reason these deportations are such a disruption and painful process that Trump IS dealing with. Biden's self-serving refusal to maintain order and security on our borders, which he falsely claimed was not possible, put those people in the crosshairs. I'm guessing they were counting on the bad optics, knowing someone would have to fix it.

The Catholic church and affiliates receive billions a year. Take away the illegals and they lose a lot of money.
The analysis, conducted using data from USAspending.gov, reviewed immigration-related federal funding awarded to Catholic NGOs between 2009 and 2024. Researchers flagged organizations affiliated with the Catholic Church, analyzed the geographical distribution of funds across dioceses, and used data visualization tools like Tableau to present the findings. The results revealed striking disparities: Catholic NGOs received $2.9 billion in the past four years, compared to $5.2 billion over the previous 16 years combined. More than half of the funding awarded since 2009 occurred under the Biden administration, raising questions about the intersection of financial incentives and ecclesiastical advocacy.
The two largest recipients of these funds were Catholic Charities, which secured $2.6 billion, and the USCCB itself, which received nearly $1.6 billion. Geographically, the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., led the way with $1.6 billion, followed by the Diocese of Fort Worth with nearly $1 billion.

I'll pay attention to what any Catholic clergyman has to say about immigration when the Pope throws open the Vatican gates, invites in everyone who wants to enter, sells all the artwork, gold and precious metals in its vaults as well as all the realestate owned by the Church across the globe and gives the proceeds to the poor, downtrodden masses they so earnestly wish to bring into my country. Until then, they can all pound sand. Luther was right; the Catholic Church is a corrupt organization pretending to be Christian.

The Catholic Church should be working on ways to fix the broken immigration system but seems Catholic Charities has found very lucrative funding vehicle instead.
Pushing people through under asylum is not a realistic answer unless you expected to grant citizenship under an amnesty program so they would feel obligated and vote accordingly which is what I believe the Democrats expected to do.
Never forget that President Trump had a very good plan in his first administration but the Democrats blocked it due to their objection to funding the construction of the border wall/barrier/fence which was only $5 billion back then.
Instead, Democrats thought they had a wedge issue and used those people, regardless of the circumstances many had to endure (rape and sexual abuse, in particular) which was simply viewed as collateral damage.
The Biden administration lost track of over 300,000 children (unaccompanied minors) too.
The Bishop should approach the Trump administration to work on a comprehensive immigration plan if he wants to actually "do" something about the issue.

Bishop Coakley: I ask this as a traditional/conservative faithful practicing Catholic: how many ILLEGAL immigrants are you supporting by letting them live in your Bishop’s residence? How many are YOU feeding with your own personal funds? How many are YOU providing with medical care using YOUR own personal funds?? Please let me know . . . I’ll gladly follow your lead . . .

Huge lie in the first sentence regarding “conservative continuity”, there never has been. Coakley is my bishop and a huge disappointment. Wanted us to write letters to Big Pharma but go ahead and take the jab. He’s pathetic.

What else could one expect from a church run by Pope Karlos Marx II? It pains me so to see my church choose politics over piety.

I've been reading info re Catholic church on another "channel." I am and always will be a Catholic. But if any of what I read is true the Catholic church in in great danger. Mostly involving money. There a hundreds of banks that do business with the Catholic church in Rome and elsewhere. I have read that certain Cardinals are very wealthy. Which leads to more corruption. Living high. Not sure about Leo. however, except for kissing and blessing a chunk of Ice I'll give him a chance. WE Catholics sit in our churches on Sunday completely unaware of what goes on in their church. Or the church in Rome. I pray for my church. I pray for those just see the skin of things and have no interest or depth to look into what's going on. It's an unholy mess.

What’s with this “humane treatment” BS? The left seems to have delivered this narrative to the Vatican, as well. Specifically point to where it is inhumane and provide evidence, or shut TF up.

So the Archbishop, like democrats, is putting illegal immigrants ahead of American citizens. The negative impacts of mass illegal immigration on every day Americans has been staggering. From escalating housing prices and crime figures, to taxpayer dollars being redirected away from programs to assist American to fund illegals (i.e. schools, healthcare, housing), this is not the righteous cause he thinks it is.

Compassion is a good thing, but you have to deal with reality.
Our government threw open our borders and invited the world in without a plan to house, feed, or take care of these immigrants. Human traffickers and drug dealers took advantage of the situation, which caused human suffering.
Just once, I would like to hear a politician or member of the clergy talk about the responsibilities of the governments of the countries of origin.

This is not a matter of faith and morals and Catholics are not obliged in any way to support or agree with the USCCB on this matter. Human dignity begins with respect to established law and the people making it, not breaking it. Deportations are focused around those breaking the law. Expect all dioceses to hire an immigration advisor at the parishioner’s expense, mine is already searching for someone. Imagine you have done volunteer work for decades, now someone is going to get a $40k salary to do what should be done by volunteers and your contributions are paying for it. It’s this kind of insensitivity that diminishes the USCCB and bishops in the eyes of parishioners.
