Target mandates employees smile and make
small talk in bid to lift holiday sales

Target wants its employees to spread some holiday cheer — whether they like it or not, according to a report. The Minneapolis-based retailer issued a new directive mandating in-store workers smile and make eye contact and either greet or wave to any shopper that comes within 10 feet, according to Bloomberg News. If a customer steps within four feet, then the service rep is instructed to ask whether they need help or how their day is going, the new guidance said. Major retailers like Walmart and Disney have long used similar customer-greeting rules that require employees to smile, make eye contact and offer assistance when guests come within a set distance.

Oe of my biggest non-policy complaints against Target has been that the store is...uncomfortable. The color scheme is horrible, shelves and racks too close together, not enough employees when I do need help, poor selection, things like that. Maybe this is an attempt to address some of that. Problem is, it can be overdone very easily. If I dont need help now, I wont need it in 30 seconds. Eventually I'll go out of my way to avoid the employees. And do they really care how I'm doing? Doubtful. Lowe's does it pretty right in my area. Since their stores are terribly organized I often cant find what I want. There is usually an employee around I can ask. Most know where it is off the top of their heads, but some need to look it up on their phones. But they dont hover and they dont pester.

I see very few employees at all at the Target stores in my area. They all congregate at the checkouts. Getting any younger employees to look anyone in the eyes is going to be a struggle.

Wonderful idea! If I didn't already not shop at Target, this would do it for me. I would like nothing better than having hundreds of employees walking the floor and talking to me while I shop. It would be almost as fun as having your waiter in a nice restaurant trying to make conversation with you such as "Is everything okay?" "Is everything still okay?" "are you sure you don't need anything?" while you are attempting to talk to your dinner date. Bad, stupid idea.

I think this is a Trader Joe’s policy and shopping there and talking with the cashiers is a delight. On the other hand, after checking out at Stew Leonard’s a couple of days ago, I noticed that my check-out fellow was an absolute snot to the woman in line behind me. I said something (I’m 70+ and rather enjoy having lost my filter), and he apologized to her, but I rather wonder if she will be racing back. I’m not sure it’s odd for companies to ask their employees to be pleasant to their customers.

I work at a large retail chain that is in this part of the country. I'm an introvert but I always greet the customers to acknowledge their existence. The store was remodeled last year and merchandise was moved to different places in the store. I think it is fun. Some of the other 'co-workers' do not offer greetings to the customers. It helps me get out of my introvert shell.

Small talk at check-out is annoying. Many times I've been behind women in the line who "small talk" the checker with six or eight people standing behind.... topics were grandchildren and children on and on.... I could not care less. Better if the checker just says "good morning, how are you?" and leaves it at that. I'm not looking for a best friend forever at the supermarket, just want to get my milk and eggs and get out of there. By the way, if you believe men and women are the same, get behind a woman in a supermarket check-out line. They wait until everything is toted up to pull out means of payment. More by the way, I boycott Target, know very well which restroom is mine.

Yep, Target stores are going down slowly but steadily in our big TX neighborhood, but I stopped shopping there over 5 years ago, when their woke policy came into effect allowing dudes to walk freely and use women's bathrooms. I've had employees deny it, unaware this was a store policy. Never mind the lawsuits and abuse reports. I'm glad their wokeness is yielding its poisonous fruit. If only Disney would become the next Target-- all would be great with the world.

Perhaps the greatest fallacy of the whole "our diversity is our strength" nonsense is the idea that people from Third World, or even post-Stone Age, low-trust societies can successfully set aside their culture and upbringing to function as members of a modern nation where their neighbor is a fellow citizen and not prey. Once upon a time, our education system was at least as devoted to developing citizens as it was to gender pronouns. Teachers took kids from rural Sicily, Jews from the ghettos of Poland and Russia, the kids of sharecroppers and coal miners; in fact, they took all comers and turned them into Americans

Hundreds of millions of smartphone users are now subject to porn bans and restrictions, as legislators in the U.S. and Europe either block adult websites completely or mandate identity and age verification checks on users accessing content. This plays into a fundamental misunderstanding of the way the global internet works. It also has drastic, long-term implications for the freedom of millions. And there are serious short-term threats as well, which has prompted a new Google warning. Whilst multiple U.S. states have enacted porn bans of various flavors, it is the U.K. that could be the trigger point for a more fundamental change to internet freedoms.
