Federal prosecutors have announced the indictment and arrest of 20 individuals, most of them sworn law enforcement officers, in the Mississippi Delta region for allegedly conspiring with Mexican drug cartels to smuggle narcotics into the United States. U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner for the Northern District of Mississippi made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday.[snip] The announcement detailed the results of a years-long federal investigation and sting operation in the Mississippi Delta region, resulting in the indictment and arrest of 20 individuals, including 14 current or former law enforcement officers and six co-conspirators.

Unsurprising. A HS friend stayed in the central Florida small city where I went to HS after getting a law degree. Visiting years later we discussed how things were going. She mentioned that they had lost several deputy sheriffs ....just suddenly disappeared and then called a couple of weeks later to have their final paychecks sent to relatives. The story is that these deputies would get approached by someone who offered them money to "be patrolling away from this part of the county when we tell you". The other end was a photo of their kid or kids at a school playground, and "we'd hate for anything to happen to your kids". Their only "out" was to just disappear, leave the state, start a new life far away, moving overnight, address unknown.
The cartels say "silver or lead"....and are not at adverse to killing your kids or wife if you won't play along. So, a lot of LE folks play along.
This only stops when the cartel folks just are found dead somewhere. Arrested and charged is purely a waste of resources.

Clarification in #1. A local dentist was arrested in that county, landing a small twin on his rural pasture, loaded with drugs. Another twin was forced down by a Customs Aircraft, and he landed on a rural dirt road and set fire to the aircraft and ran into the forest.
The deputies were to be patrolling 'elsewhere' when drug planes were landing on rural pasture lands.
Today, the radars are too good to get away with flying the drugs in, but they still need LE to 'look away'.

Photos show the Sheriffs of two counties. Both black. No info on the deputies involved, as far as race.
Sad to see, but they keep working hard to reinforce the stereotypes.

Freom AP article re those two sheriffs:
Gaston and Williams are alleged to have received bribes in exchange for giving the operations their “blessing,” one indictment said. It also alleged that Gaston attempted to disguise the payments as campaign contributions, but did not report them as required by law.

"Mississippi Law Enforcement CAUGHT Working with the Cartel"
Pretty sure the cartel would correct that to

They’re a disgrace to the badge, and a traitor to their fellow officers. Put them in prison - in the general population.
And, #1: they knew the job was tough when they took it.

One of my secret tv watching pleasures is the constantly rerunning Storage Wars.
The show, partly fake in my opinion, has a theme song.
"Money Owns This Town."
I thought of that song when I read this article.

These stories always make me feel sorry for the good guys. Most cops are working hard to protect citizens doing a job few would want to do. Then you have these POS morons.

I used to manage Air Force Programs at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.
I saw some strange things going on in one program. When I started looking into it I was informed that Senator Trent Lott ran things in Mississippi so I looked into it a bit further. Seems his organization there was nick named the "Mississippi Mafia" That told me what I needed to know. I tried to shut down the crooked program and was forced to let it ride. Now you know how Senators stay in Power, all their Thugs run things with Top Cover!
