President Trump called on Republicans Thursday to invoke the so-called “nuclear option” and change Senate rules to allow legislation to end the 30-day-long government shutdown to pass with a simple majority vote. “It is now time for the Republicans to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” the president wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post. Trump explained that during his whirlwind Asia trip “the one question that kept coming up, however, was how did the Democrats SHUT DOWN-

That is playing into their hands. This is the purpose they hung out such preposterous demands which they know all along Trump will never accept. Provoke the Republicans into destroying the filibuster and the next time there are 51 Democrats in the Senate the whole ball game is theirs without doing anything.

If they change the rules now the Democrats can do it later when they gain control again. Let Schumer run this thing on it isn't doing him any good, a could do him a lot of harm.

Don't you think the Democrats are going to end the filibuster at the first opportunity anyway? When Democrats say "let's work together," what they mean is "you Republicans give us everything we want." I think it will only get worse because IMHO, the Democrat party is likely to continue to go hard left. Unfortunately, our education system has indoctrinated a generation or two of citizens who lack critical thinking skills and will fall for the promise of Santa Claus.

If our GOP representatives vote to end the filibuster THEY will be seen as having saved everyone. I do not get why the filibuster is seen as so valuable when it has been set aside before and is not a Constitutional requirement but just a Senate preference not a law.

I don't think it is necessary to end the filibuster rule. The Democrats will lose the shutdown battle. I heard some House Republicans were complaining they need to get back to work. Really? No one is stopping House Republicans from working. Ridiculous that any House Republican would not be working.

Perhaps the 60 vote rule needs to be eliminated for issues like continuing resolutions (as it is for "reconcilation" bills). That way, a minority cannot shut down the government. They still would need 60 to pass the funding bills.

Some posters here have observed that Democrats *will* nuke the filibuster the next time they hold the reins of power in the Senate, so that we might as well do it now. (That is certainly their history, as Harry Reid ended cloture rules on judicial nominees after Bill Frist had merely threatened to do so a decade earlier.) Others here think we should hold the line as-is. I'm closer to the first bunch myself, but I have a modest proposal: Why not simply lower the cloture threshold to 55 Senators, which would allow leader Thune to get the votes of the 2-3 sane Democrats in the Senate but otherwise preserve a "watered down" version of what passes for the filibuster today?

National Review is turning 70. The legacy of that publication is hard to sum up, but suffice it to say, its impact on American politics has been enormous, and it’s one I certainly feel personally. I worked there for a couple of years, and I was very grateful for the job and the experience it gave me. My tenure at NR only overlapped with the last few months of William F. Buckley’s life, though I had met him once earlier in my career — he presented me with an award in front of my parents, who flew out to D.C. for the occasion —

Americans across the country usually have little reason to pay close attention to the politics of New York City — despite its size and status as the world’s financial capital — because it rarely affects them. However, as New Yorkers head to the ballot box next week to vote in the most significant mayoral race in decades, the eyes of the nation are fixated on the rise of a Marxist-Islamist as their likely choice in a city the nation rallied around in the wake of the attacks of 9/11.Zohran Mamdani, a self-proclaimed socialist, pro-Islamist, and naturalized U.S. citizen from Uganda, is poised to win the race.

The judge overseeing Letitia James’ mortgage fraud case on Friday denied a motion from the New York attorney general attempting to force federal prosecutors to keep a log of all their communications with the media. First Italy, now South America. Populism is awake, and it sounds like common sense. From Milei in Buenos Aires to Meloni in Rome and Independents in Basingstoke, the revenge of the ordinary working man and woman, long sneered at by the metropolitan elite, is in full swing. In Buenos Aires, Javier Milei’s alliance has just cemented control of Congress with roughly 40% of the vote after delivering Argentina’s first budget surplus in 14 years. Inflation, once galloping toward 300%, is finally falling. The peso is stabilising. Exports are hitting record highs. For the first time in a generation, Argentina smells less like crisis and more like competence.
