One aspect of the government shutdown that probably wasn’t anticipated by Chuck Schumer and other Democrats, is that it has revealed to the public just how many people receive food stamps.
Years ago, when the program was still called ‘food stamps’ it was seen as something that struggling families might use temporarily to get through a hard time. Then it was re-branded as the ‘SNAP’ program and destigmatized. People were encouraged to enroll. Now there are many more people using the program, many who probably don’t even really need it.

The money for nothing and free meals through the public school systems really fry me. They are teaching children all of the wrong lessons before they even get out into the world and it's probably deliberate. Those of us who grew up struggling and watching our pennies are the backbone of America today and I fear those drives and skills are being lost. The dependent welfare parents are a lost cause but the children can still be taught.

There are some school districts that provide free breakfast, free lunch, free mid afternoon snacks, and free dinner, to their students
And some of the students also receive WIC food benefits plus food stamps. (SNAP)
Is there a reduction in SNAP, WIC, under these circumstances?
Of course not!

Our local school system gives out free food all year long, even in the summer. It teaches kids that it is the government's responsibility to feed them.
If we were Bangladesh I might see it, but there are no starving kids in America. If anything they are very fat. I would rather see them bring a brown bag lunch from home of carry a Batman or Barbie lunch box, bought and filled by their parents. It doesn't cost much to put in a peanut butter sandwich and an apple, and is more American.
Our religious group and quite a few locals are having food drives in anticipation of the funding stoppage. Thats how it should be. Its not on automatic and if someone abuses it they can cut them off. Charity should not be a lifestyle.

I want no one to go hungry, especially kids who have been burdened with parents who make bad choices.
That being said, the system needs to be reformed. Too many families with able adults who refuse to work are getting food stamps. I have delivered food from our church pantry to homes were there were young men sitting on the couch in the middle of the day playing games on their phone. Perhaps we should all apply for them and force the system to put up boundaries.

And 40% on food stamps are illegals.
It is like leaving out pie on the kitchen counter when you know you have roaches.

If any of you have ever bought adult beverages or cigarettes at Walgreens, whether you’re 21 or 80 you have to show an ID which is scanned. If they did the same to food stamps you would eliminate a lot of fraud. Food stamps are a whole “currency” unto themselves, drug dealers buy them @.50 on the dollar, unethical store owners buy them and use them to stock their shelves with Walmart food. You could roll the program out starting with people that “loose” their cards and request replacements 12 times a year. Maybe with some of the savings the government could be a little more generous with the senior citizens, if a senior citizen gets 900 a month they’re only eligible for 12 per month. In my area the whole program is run by the same demographic that receives the benefit. If your not the correct demographic, you won’t get it.

Food stamps are a good thing to have for those who truly need them, but I'm afraid the vast majority of them are going to people who should not have them.

If a computer can monitor what you leave the store with, it's smart enough to know what you can buy. The bar codes on products can show what a recipient can or cannot purchase and plain staples, like beans, rice, vegetables and milk is what should be allowed, along with 80/20 ground beef, chicken and Boston butt pork. No sirloin and center cut pork chops or rotisserie chickens allowed. If you can’t work a job, you must have time to cook. I, for one, am tired of seeing bling covered mavens, with carts full of prepared foods and trash food in the check-out line or loading expensive SUV's and knowing that my tax dollars paid for it. The idea was to help unfourtunates get over the hump until they found a new source of income, not a way of life. And one illegitimate child can be a mistake, but half a dozen is planned. I worked to support my two without government assistance and all of the people I associate with did the same. Every business I pass or even use, has 'hiring' or help wanted signs. There are jobs out there.

Revealing to me is the absolute lack of gratefulness being displayed. The entitlement on display is stunning! I'm even more convinced that the government should be out of the charity business entirely and it should go back local organizations--NOT government funded. They are closer to the situation of the needy and provide more targeted assistance and likely be better at preventing fraud.

I was visiting my daughter at the University of Colorado Boulder for graduation. We were in a grocery store. She was buying a lot of odd food. I asked what was up. She said she had to clear off her card.
She had an food stamp card! EBT card. I was absolutely shocked (I'm old). She said the University automatically signs students up. I said future Drs and lawyers get an EBT card? Everyone who qualifies. Automatically.
I was amazed. I still am
