The Medicare deduction rises $21.50, to $206.50 per month. This negates a large part of the SS increase.

Mt 90 year old widowed mother should be paid enough every month by social security to pay for her caregivers and living expenses so she can stay in her paid off house. Mom and Dad were forced to pay into a useless "retirement plan." As I inch towards recovering my "retirement plan" called social security I am disgusted.

So we get a slight increase in Social Security. Everything else is also going up (Medicare, insurance premiums, insurance co-pays, medications, utilities, food, etc.) and we are deeper in the hole because the SS increase doesn't cover even half of the increases.

#9 is correct. The deposits should be safe, though, Federally insured bank CDs or T-Bills. If individuals are left to make their own investments, they could be subject to the whims of the market. Some might invest their money in Greek bonds, Somalian gold mines or Nigerian "windfalls" and end up with nothing in their retirement account. Without some kind of oversight, many would end up selling pencils on a street corner.

Yeah, the 2.8 percent is way low but beats a sharp stick in the eye. #9 hits on some interesting history. When W was president he proposed to change the social security system to an individual payer system where people would contribute to their own account via a payroll deduction and invest the money how they see fit. A 401k-like system. The congress creatures laughed him out of the room.

As the government shutdown winds on, Democrats continue to hold the federal government hostage because, they claim, “premiums will double” if Congress does not extend Covid-era enhanced Obamacare subsidies. I’ve debunked that topic in detail here and elsewhere, but to quickly summarize the argument: 1) The federal government will still pay on average 75-80 percent of enrollees’ premiums if the enhanced subsidies expire. 2) Nearly half of Exchange enrollees currently pay nothing in out-of-pocket premiums for benchmark coverage, which the Congressional Budget Office and others have concluded has led to over $10 billion in fraud every year. 3) Focusing on relative (i.e., percentage) increases ignores the comparatively modest effects
