Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups has been charged in a bombshell alleged illegal poker scheme tied to organized crime that netted upwards of $7 million.
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was charged as well, in a separate but related illegal gambling case.
Thirty one people — including members of the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese and Lucchese mafia families, and coaches and players from the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trial Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors — have been arrested in the scheme carried out between January 2022 and March 2024,

I suspected it would be just a matter of time before Chauncy would go wrong.

It is rare for me to watch TV especially early in the morning. I saw this announcement about an hour so ago. Stunning multi-state operation. My baseball heart still grieves for Pete Rose!

The sports connection is somewhat incidental; No gambling on sports games is being alleged. Rather different from the Blacksox or even Pete Rose.

Why am I not surprised. The cheaters are thieves. Pro sports are turning into more of a cesspool than it was before. I don't bet on sports, but it makes you wonder how many are taking a dive for money, a la "Black Sox" scandal (say it ain't so, Joe) Why watch at all if you think that the games are fixed?

Don't care! It doesn't affect me or my livelihood in the least. With casinos everywhere, so that governments can take a bigger portion of people's disposable income, why would this shock anyone. The only reason the FBI is even involved has to be because the government is not getting their cut. I don't gamble and don't place bets, as I believe in spending my hard earned cash on tangible items I want. And I quit watching the black thug league a long time ago. I used to kind of enjoy the NBA when the Celtics were dominant and when Pistol Pete, Shaq, Robert Parrish and Larry Bird were still playing. Now, with cry-babies like LaBron as their standard bearers, it's dead to me. If one team threw all their games for betting purposes, it wouldn't affect me one bit!

Yes. The intrio clearly states this was ahout RIGGED POKER GAMES. Not basketball games. The involvement of NBA players made for the ,clickbait headline. Remember, the NYP is a tabloid. Lives by sensational headlines.

RE #8, #11 And John Stockton. I'm sure there are other greats, but none from this latest crowd of thugs. I haven't watched the NBA since the early 90's just for that reason. The NFL is getting the same way. Stopped watching that when the Kaepernick caper began with all the kneeling. The NIL and the transfer portal is ruining college sports now. It's all for the buck. So for now, I watch the grass grow with golf.

The announcement said this was a multi-YEAR investigation so started during the Biden term.
Yet, somehow an ESPN personality decided it was Trump's doing in some sort of twisted diatribe.
Just goes to show how BIASED people have become and have knee-jerk reactions to so many things.

I used to wonder while watching the pros and college sports teams - what happened to teaching and coaching the fundamentals? I had questions like "How can a player or teams of players get so far without a good grounding in the fundamentals of the sports they competed in?" Fundamentals seemingly go out the window when there are parleys and betting with a click of a mouse. Four of the 5 families involved? When was the last time that happened? The Vegas skim. The gasoline tax scam, and probably a few more scams. Now College and Pro sports betting? The deeper this is dug into, the longer the entertainment of sports will be on a possible hiatus.

You are an NBA player or coach. You have more than enough money to take care of your family and live a very comfortable life. Then you gamble it all away in a quest for money you don't need. Stupid.
