The Trump administration says it is cancelling student debt for millions of borrowers — a pivot from its previous moves to block some loan forgiveness plans.
In an agreement with the American Federation of Teachers, the White House will again start processing student loan forgiveness for eligible borrowers in two income-driven repayment plans – Income-Contingent Repayment and Pay as You Earn – until they expire.
President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” is slated to phase out those two programs by July 1, 2028. They have over 2.5 million enrollees total, a higher ed expert estimated.

Shaking my head here in disbelief. A slap in the face to all who paid and/or worked hard and spent years to pay off. To boot, all the libs who despise Trump that will benefit must be snarking up their sleeves.

Quit making government student loans. Go back to students getting their loans from the banks.

#4, they lack gratitude and appreciate nothing that Trump does and will do for them and, despite this, will continue to hate and trash Trump.

The least he could do is write a thank you letter to my husband for six years as a naval officer after his four years of government paid tuition.

Student loans were a problem, Obama turned it into a debacle. Spot on #5, AND fix what is wrong with outrageous tuition (not to mention with universities).

37 trillion in federal debt. 104 trillion in total US debt. How much of that debt will never be paid back? Student debt is just one area. What can they do about it? Get it off the books. Forgive it. That's reality. Much more to come. Who ends up holding the empty bag. Does this tie into the government shutdown. Our government is out of money.

Trump must be getting mislead by advisors and cabinet sec's again. Either that, or the media and lying journalistas are obfuscating the details in order to sell more ads.

Like most government give-away programs, you always have to read the last line. You and I aren't getting any of this money back.

The only deal he should be making with the AFT is "Disband and expunge your union, and I won't prosecute you for fraud and unAmerican activities."

Mostly a fraudulent report. The BBB set the time to cancel this program....which Congress decided on, not the WH. So the bureaucrats will be doing what CONGRESS ordered by law.....NOT the WH.
Mostly an anti-Trump twist to the facts.

This change will also negate the treatment of cancelled debt as income. So $100,000 of cancelled debt will not incur a tax bill of $20,000. Win-win for students. Lose-lose for American taxpayers.

There is so much wrong with the student loan program. At least the two forgiveness programs are being phased out. There need to be strict caps on amounts students can borrow. And the government should not be charging usurious interest rates.

The government should never have gotten into the student loan business. It was Obama that changed it from the banks loaning students money to Big Government doing the loaning. And it's been BIG problems with loaning money by the demonrats or stupid republicans ever since.

And another thing. Since I owed the bank my student loan monies, we had to sell our house to pay the loan back. Where do I get my money back?

I don't like this. These people signed an agreement to pay back their loans. I don't think the hard working people of this country should pay for deadbeats loans.

It isn't legal for a president to unilaterally cancel contractual debt on money that has changed hands; the debt gets shifted from individual "borrowers" to tax payers by default. Without being authorized by Congress, a president shifting debt to the taxpayers is in conflict with the 1884 Anti-deficiency Act, as amended in 1982, which prevents incurring the obligation of funds not appropriated by Congress and/or in excess of appropriated amounts.

I am 72. I elected not to go to college after high school in 1971 because I could not afford even junior college prices. My mom had 5 children of which I was 2nd oldest. My dead beat dad left when I was nearly 5 and I didn't know anything about him until I was in my 30s and was contacted by a half sister from one of his other families. He was dead. He had at least 2 other families, maybe more.
Back then we had great education in high school. From what I've seen with my grandchildren we were learning stuff they are taking in college. I was an engineer at a shoe company and when they went over seas to make shoes I began work as office manager of an engineering firm. I made good money at both jobs and worked with good bosses. I do not like that student debt is forgiven (what is this - the umpteenth dozen time?!?). I think the colleges should be made to forgive 50% of debt for students who do not graduate and the students should be responsible for the other 50%. But what do I know?!?

Its a bit more nuanced than the headline implies.
Briefly: There were plans in place prior to Biden, where borrowers could apply and have their loans restructured or possibly forgiven. Trump is allowing ELLIGIBE borrowers applications to proceed and new applications to be submitted.
This isn't the blanket forgiveness that the headline implies.
So, ya'll can put your twisted panties back on.

The danger of not reading the artiicle. Did you know this?
“The Biden Administration’s illegal attempts at mass student loan forgiveness impacted all of the Department’s income-driven repayment programs, including Income-Based Repayment. The courts intervened to stop their illegal efforts but that also impacted Department systems and prevented us from processing lawful loan discharges,” a spokesperson for the Department of Education told The Post in a statement.
“Thanks to the Trump Administration’s efforts to separate out the illegal loan cancellation schemes, we are able to process legitimate loan cancellations once again.”
In a lawsuit filed in March, the AFT — which has about 1.8 million members — accused Trump officials of blocking federal student loan holders from accessing programs that were in effect when they first borrowed.
