Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is proposing the revival of a corporate tax that the Windy City eliminated over a decade ago that businesses are warning would cost the city jobs. Johnson is proposing a so-called "head tax" that would apply to companies with more than 100 employees and would levy a monthly $21 per employee on companies that meet the employment threshold. The amount of the tax would increase based on inflation, and would be assessed based on the number of employees who work in Chicago 50% or more of the time. The mayor sees it as a means of

CHICAGO — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker turned heads this week when his campaign disclosed he won $1.4 million gambling last year. Though the billionaire Democrat doesn’t frequent Las Vegas casinos as much as he once did, the windfall is a reminder of his high-stakes past. Pritzker has been a blackjack player for more than two decades, long before he entered public office. “He’s a whale in Vegas,” said a businessperson who’s known Pritzker for years and was granted anonymity to speak freely. “I was incredibly lucky,” Pritzker told reporters Thursday when asked about the big win. “You have to be

Declaring that he is leading a “movement that won the battle over the soul of the Democratic Party,” Zohran Mamdani used a raucous rally with over 3,000 supporters in Manhattan’s Washington Heights on Monday night to assert his mayoral campaign as proof of a politics much bigger than his bid for City Hall. The Democratic nominee and proud democratic socialist, who almost overnight after his surprise primary win in June became a national superstar, has a wide lead in the polls. And though many who rallied for him on Monday to kick off the final stretch into November stressed to

Sen. Cory Booker is racing down the aisle! During his appearance on the I've Had It podcast released on Tuesday, Oct. 14, the newly engaged Democratic New Jersey lawmaker, 56, revealed that he's fast-tracking his "I dos." "I've had it with being single. 100%. Being single is not fun, especially when you're trying to date," Booker told hosts Jennifer Welch and Angie "Pumps" Sullivan. "And as a United States Senator, it's been a difficult, challenging time. So I've had it with that, and I'm very psyched that I'm getting married." Booker announced his engagement to Alexis Lewis on Tuesday, Sept.

The National Education Association (NEA), which represents millions of U.S. educators, sent an email to its approximately 3 million members with a map omitting Israel and labeling the territory as “Palestine.” The email was described as a resource packet for teaching about indigenous peoples, but critics argue it was promoting not recognizing Israel. The North American Values Institute (NAVI) called the inclusion of the map in the NEA email “an inexcusable lapse,” arguing the union must be held accountable for disseminating content that rationalizes anti-Israel sentiment. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) also condemned the action, saying it crosses from careless oversight

Katie Porter’s “unhappy experience” in a viral interview has become the news cycle from hell. The bipartisan pile-on following the widely-circulated clip of her contentious sit-down with a local CBS news reporter was only hours old when a new video surfaced from POLITICO of the former House member berating a staffer in 2021 — the two clips fueling long-simmering concerns about her temperament and judgment. Together, they suddenly boiled over into the broader political zeitgeist, raising questions about just how durable Porter’s lead in California’s gubernatorial race really is. “Is this a disaster? Yes,” said Gale Kaufman, a veteran Democrat

Would-be Trump assassin Ryan Routh was declared guilty on Tuesday on all charges, but The New York Times accidentally published the wrong article. In journalism, outlets often pre-write obituaries, election outcomes and potential court verdicts of major cases before they occur, using the basic facts of the story and adding whatever key details are essential on the day of. However, a screenshot indicated that the New York Times accidentally published a headline, "Man Found Not Guilty of Trying to Assassinate Trump in Florida." The lede of the now-scrubbed article added, "In a surprise verdict, a federal jury acquitted Ryan Routh

Following 25 years of what oil and gas executives categorize as hostility to the industry, the state is now making a play to keep those companies from leaving. Concerned with the exodus of oil and gas companies, refinery closures and the expensive price of gasoline in the state, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation last week that fast tracks the approval of 2,000 new wells per year over the next 10 years in Kern County, a significant oil-producing region. Andy Walz, Chevron's president of Americas products, said during an appearance on FOX Business, "I think it's been a tyranny of
