Computer industry executives, economists, government officials and businesspeople all seem to be very high on the prospects for artificial intelligence (AI). But what about average Americans? They mostly believe AI should be feared, not embraced, the latest I&I/TIPP Poll shows.
To kick off the three-question national online poll on AI, I&I/TIPP first asked 1,362 Americans the following: “Do you think artificial intelligence (AI) will mostly create new jobs, mostly take away jobs, or not make much difference?”
It wasn’t close. Just 17% responded that AI would create jobs,

AI is dangerous in the way that all new technology is dangerous. In the early stages, it will be problematic. People will expect certain capabilities that are not really mature enough to do the job well. People will have confidence in the technology that is not justified. As with all technology, it will get refined and improved over time.
As to jobs, of course some jobs will no longer be required. Those jobs right now are filled because there is a need for them. Many people will transition smoothly to other opportunities, some that are new because AI will open new paths for work. Some people will struggle to transition. This is an old and unending story. Technological societies are continually evolving. We used to have telephone switchboard operators. Now that job doesn't exist. But there are numerous jobs building new cell phones and the numerous applications that run on them. The apps allow people that use them to be more efficient and creative, even establishing new jobs that can make use of that technology. There will even be new jobs that help people transition through the disruption of introducing AI technology.
From an AI lookup: An ancient concept, most famously attributed to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus (c. 535–475 BCE), who observed that the universe and all within it are in a perpetual state of flux. The idea suggests that change is an inherent and unavoidable aspect of existence, and therefore, the only thing we can truly expect to remain consistent is the fact that everything else will change.
Learning to flow within that change is one of the most valuable of life skills.

The danger from AI is that it is being programmed to believe that truth is relative. Specifically, it is programmed not to treat anything as absolutely true (possibly excepting math).

This is like asking - Is fire dangerous? Well, yes and no. Unfortunately, at this stage we have little children playing with matches. As well as evil minded arsonists who need being watched over and controlled if required.

Trump is reshoring trillions of dollars of jobs back into the USA: manufacturing, drug companies, rare minerals, steel production, autos, and many others. Someone will need to build all those data centers, servers, and expand the electric grid. The infrastructure of the nation is in tatters. Crime is rampant with many positions in law enforcement. The population is aging. Maybe we could train an American doctor and nurse. Who is going to build and maintain all those robots that are going to do everything? As illegals are deported, who will do all those jobs Americans won't do? With all this automation and software comes cybercriminals. We are extremely short on cybersecurity enforcement. Who is going to fill all those jobs in the defense industry, more ammo, new F47's? There are tremendous needs for work around the world. Americans are free to work outside the USA.

All the time/labor saving devices humanity has invented over millennia. We will be further enslaved by the demands of a new AI world, and there will always be those who will use this new majik for terrible purposes, but at least the wimen-folk won't be pounding laundry on rocks by the creek.

Is AI dangerous? Only for those who cannot think for themselves.
Will AI cost jobs? Technology costs jobs. I can imagine some day in the distant future where only a small percentage of the population will be able to find work because everything is automated. What would it do to the economy? What will the world look like? It shouldn't come as a surprise. Look how much the world has changed in the last century.

I'll bet it eliminates the need for most government jobs as much of the work can be automated.
Much like ATM's eliminated the basic functions for banks.

AI is only useful to wade through mountains of information. I work in a high technical niche area of computing, and we use AI to assist in diagnosing issues with the systems. A human needs to evaluate the returns from AI, since many times it will lead you down a path that eventually loops back on itself. The real issue is there isn’t any innovation using AI, why figure out a better approach when I can ask to see what others have done…

I'm thankful for advances like indoor plumbing, but let's face it. One of the complaints about the Gen Z generation is that they are so out-of-touch with the real world: having been born into the Internet digital age.
I guess we shall see.

There is tremendous potential for AI, badly done, to be extremely destructive.

Great idea: To determine whether something is dangerous or not, you should always . . . take a survey?
These people at I&I are about as ridiculous as they come!
