President Trump called on his administration to reopen and expand Alcatraz so authorities could send the “dregs of society” to the notorious California prison more than six decades after it closed.
The commander in chief announced Sunday that he was directing the Bureau of Prisons and other federal agencies to get the massive island facility off the San Francisco bay — which has long been the lore of Hollywood — back up and running again to lock away homegrown, repeat criminals.“For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering,”

I like the way he thinks. I know some people who have caused him much undeserved misery that would enjoy a view of San Francisco from the water. One could probably see her own house and the other may be tempted to slip his pencil neck through the bars and get his head stuck. I hear that Great White Sharks are now available to supplement security guards.

They need to run it the same way it was when Scarface Al Capone was there.

#5; That was good!
Now, the MAGA caps have two meanings. No need to make a different one.

How many billions will it take to get the place up to today's standards? Here comes a new round of kickbacks! The Democrats will complain but will quietly let it go through. There's money to be had!

Yours truly has been advocating for this to happen for years, and yes, the POTUS has made this decision to become true! A total rebuild is in order to house the worst of the worst FAFO dregs! I lived on the Island for 30 days during the Native American Takeover as a young College Student from Arizona. Even had guard duty up on the Main Cell Block Roof with others. It made a profound impression on me because it is indeed a historical landmark and I see its original purpose still unfulfilled until now! Do it SIR!

It will cost a lot to repair and bring up to modern standards but a lot less than building a huge new facility we might need.

I love President Trump, but this is an island too far. It was closed 60 years ago because it was God-awful expensive to run and maintain. The repairs and updates necessary to get it up and running again would cost a staggering amount of money. The number of prisoners it could hold would be so small as to make it cost-prohibitive.
There are thousands of acres of unused federal land in Arizona and New Mexico where a new prison could be built, one like “Supermax” in Colorado or Marion, in Illinois, which is mostly underground. That would be a better use of the taxpayers’ money. Leave Alcatraz alone. It’s a symbol of a bygone era.

Another thought. Does this mean deportations under the Enemies Illegal Aliens Deportation Act of 200 years ago might fall through?

#3 Don't forget AOC, Jasmine "foul-mouth" Crockett and Crazy Maxine Waters. Just for kicks, throw in Collins and Murkowski too. The last two vote more with the Democrats than with the Republicans anyway. Don't bother to update the place either.

I can't help but believe that President Trump is trolling the Lamestreams.... again!
This gets the headlines while he is doing something important, out of the spotlight, with his other hand.

Better idea is to build brand new CECOT like in El Salvador but site it in the Aleutians. Where they would shiver most of the time. Alcatraz is too small. But I like the idea of the symbolism.

Trump likes symbolism. That being said, I believe that there are federal prisons elsewhere that could be reopened to house the dregs at a much lower cost.

Great location. It's close enough to easily house California's homeless problem, and also located near the home of America's most corrupt politicians!

I love this idea...let the scum sit in jail at Alcatraz waiting for the court appearance.....the democrats want them to have...it's priceless...just what WE needed to explain President Trump's answer to all the whacko judges who are looking for some camera time.....the Washington DC lawyers will have to do some real research to find something to stop the Alcatraz boats filled with scum and illegal criminals...perhaps a democrat senator will visit Alcatraz and visit with the inmates....

I really thought it was not possible for him to lose me, but this might do it. That concrete has been in that salt air for 100 years and is about as soft as a birthday cake at a rest home. I toured it just a few years ago and the concrete is now worthless for security. What is it going to cost to rehab that place? As the McDonald's sign says, billion and billions. He could build a new super max for less money and have real security. It will not be possible to bring that place up to modern security standards at any cost. He is also wrong about no excapes in the past - the Anglin brothers would disagree.

This is a stupid idea IMHO. There are plenty of places to locate a Super-Duper MAX FCU.

Never going to happen. Alcatraz island was the first acquisition by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, an entity created in 1972 by Congress and signed into law by President Nixon. It is run by the National Park Service. In other words it is part of a national park. The only way to remove it from the Park Service is to get legislation passed by Congress. That ain't ever going to happen.

The maximum prisoner capacity of Alcatraz was 336 people. Unless they are going to raze the place (which IS falling down ) and start from scratch with a much larger capacity, it is an impractical idea. Heck the original design wouldn't even hold all the people who are employed within the U.S. Capitol building who deserve to be in a prison like Alcatraz.
But heck, if they wanna bulldoze the ground flat and make the whole island a Joe Arpaio Tent City Jail type thing, I'd think it a great idea.

@#3 - Hillary must be on that list. She should be the 1st 'guest' to take up residency - preferably in Cell Block D.
