There was a time in the mid-1960s when two left-wing Columbia University professors — Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven — enjoyed a brief run of media celebrity by espousing a strategy for Democrats they believed could force the creation of an American welfare state based on a guaranteed annual income. Call me a silly goose, but I remember watching the news when I was a kid growing up in Detroit, and seeing recalcitrant, soap-dodging Marxist hippies becoming intimately acquainted with the business end of the policemen's billy clubs, thus compelling them to rethink their "rebellious" plans for the evening. Hilarity ensued. My, how things have changed.
For starters, the "rebellious" beatniks have changed drastically. The male hippies of the 1960s no longer look like a hirsute Expedia troll, à la George Harrison on his iconic LP, "All Things Must Pass."

On May 5 Star Tribune reporter Paul Walsh covered the filing of charges against German Adriano Llangari Inga. Llangari Inga — “of Minneapolis” — was charged with driving drunk, unlicensed, and uninsured when he killed Victoria Eileen Harwell in a head-on crash on August 3, 2024, nine months before the charges were filed.
When I wrote to ask Walsh if he could ascertain whether Llangari Inga was an illegal alien, Walsh corresponded with me in an obnoxious fashion. I followed up with ICE on my own and received this statement on May 6:

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany, N.Y., have opened a criminal investigation into allegations of mortgage fraud involving New York Attorney General Letitia "No One Is Above the Law" James, a source with direct knowledge of the probe confirmed to The New York Post. The investigation, initially revealed by the Albany Times Union, comes on the heels of a formal referral to the Justice Department by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte, who last month urged prosecutors to examine James’s conduct.

I’m in New York for last night’s Manhattan Institute’s annual Alexander Hamilton Award dinner. Held last night at Cipriani on 42nd Street, this year the award honored long-time Manhattan Institute chairman Paul Singer. As of last night, Mr. Singer has stepped down and been succeeded as MI chairman by Betsy DeVos.
Mr. Singer is the founder and president of Elliott Investment Management. He is also the philanthropic supporter of conservative and Jewish causes.

An alligator attacked and killed a woman who was canoeing with her husband on a central Florida lake Tuesday afternoon, authorities said, after her spouse tried unsuccessfuly to fight off the predator.
The attack occurred near the mouth of Tiger Creek into Lake Kissimmee, south of Orlando, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said. It's near the same location as a March alligator attack in which a woman was bitten on the elbow while kayaking.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Dozens of residents were urgently evacuated from a 12-story condominium building on Tuesday after construction workers discovered a growing crack in a support column in the building’s parking garage.

The incident unfolded quickly as Clearwater Fire & Rescue and Clearwater police officers went door to door, evacuating about 60 people from the South Beach III Condos, located at 1460 Gulf Boulevard. No injuries were reported, and the building has not collapsed, but officials say no one will be allowed back inside until engineers deem it safe.

Today the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released a report on the FBI’s investigation of James (“Tom”) Hodgkinson’s attempt to assassinate the Republican House members’ baseball team. You can read the report here. The Committee excoriates the FBI for mislabeling Hodgkinson’s firing of 70 rounds at Republican Congressmen an instance of “suicide by cop.”

The Catholic Church has issued a warning to its clergy in Washington state: Any priest who complies with a new law requiring the reporting of child abuse confessions to authorities will be excommunicated.
