Chinese producers of plastic Christmas trees and other festive decorations say orders from U.S. clients, which are crucial for their business, should have started to come in by now. But because of surging import tariffs, they haven't.
U.S. President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Chinese imports by 104% so far this year in an escalating trade war that threatens great pain for the world's largest exporter of manufactured goods.
U.S. retailers are almost completely reliant on China for Christmas decorations, where they source 87% of such goods - worth roughly $4 billion. Chinese factories are also heavily dependent on the U.S. market, where they sell half of what they make.

Yeah, well purple and pink were never Christmassy colors, and the ChiComs could never figure that out.

It's ironic that an atheist country depends on selling Christmas decorations. Perhaps just use last years decorations again. Or buy some at garage sales over the summer. There are always other options.

I don't think the meaning of Christmas has anything to do with cheap Chinese made ornaments or blow-up cartoon characters.

It's because Vietnam, Malaysia, and the rest of SE Asia will be filling those US orders, not Xi and his chicoms. They had their chance to preserve their market share but they hung themselves out to dry on this tariff thing..

Ya think Xi is broken hearted that he can't help liven the celebration of our Savior's B-day?

The headline reminds me of a Newsweek cover after the 1994 midterms, when they drew Newt Gingrich as The Grinch. Hardly original here. The over-the-top decorations from China won’t be missed by everyone, even though like others suggest, someone else may step up and fill the gap.

Xi FAFO'd. I can do without cheap trinkets from China made by slave labor. Besides, I still have thirty six boxes of ornaments out in the garage. Turn the ship around, thief.

Christmas decorations would be vastly improved with the absence of Chinese made inflatable dinosaurs and all their other kitschy junk.

Per #11 and #14. We still decorate with popcorn chains and papers garlands made by our kids. They are in their fifties now. I didn't check the lights (newer) but I am sure they must have come from China. Other countries will fill the gap with cheap goods. We are the world's biggest trading partner. A tariff like this one on China will be devastating to their economy.

The headline could read "Trump has giving the United States a come back to Jesus moment".
We don't need cheap china crap to celebrate Christmas. It has gotten out of hand and we can do without and start producing quality items here in the USA.

Here's my prediction:
Anger over lost wages and business opportunity will mount to such a level that the CP will be unable to control it. They will have no other alternative than to dump Xi Jinping. Out of power, he will likely face the wrath of the CCP. It will be beautiful! We'll be so glad we're alive to see it!
And as a result of this triumphant revolt, the middle class will gain a renewed sense of it's strength and assert itself confidently in future Chinese policy. They will liberalize their institutions and their people will gain more freedom and autonomy. Mao's butt; they will like it!
In other words, President Trump will liberate China without threatening or firing a shot!
It will be the greatest foreign policy victory since President Reagan's over Russia; it will be the inverse of the Marxist's strategy of the revolution--the bourgeoisie defeating the dictatorship of the proletariat!

I have some sympathy for ordinary Chinese citizens but they must know by now that Xi prefers pushing them into further poverty and misery rather than lose face. With a face like his, losing it would not be that bad.

Lose China and the gaudy merchandising of Christ’s birth and maybe we’ll be rewarded with a glorious white Christmas Day.

Use what you had last year! Also, as we age we put out less and less Decorations (which Hubby says is still way too much) so we can hand them down to our Children, or give them away! We can get along without China's stuff!

The commercialization detracts from the true meaning of Christmas. All the xmas junk sold is just another one of the devil's temptations, so the less of it the better.

I went to Hobby Lobby yesterday and while I applaud their corporate religious outreach, I looked for almost an hour to find anything in the store that didn't say, Made in China". I finally found something at the checkout counter, and it was candy. The amount of garbage that is for sale in that store is off the charts. Then I thought, Michael's, and Walmart have the same crap as does every other local store in this country. We can do without any of it.
