Europe braces for flood of Chinese goods
after US tariffs

Original Article

A flood of discounted Chinese imports is set to compound the economic dangers to Europe from Donald Trump’s tariffs, analysts warn, prompting Brussels to prepare measures to protect itself from a wave of cheap goods from Asia. The direct impact of the US president’s 20 per cent levy on EU products has sparked fears about the outlook for the bloc’s embattled manufacturers, who are already reeling from US levies on cars and steel. But the severity of Trump’s tariffs on economies such as China and Vietnam means Brussels is now on alert for an influx of Asian products such as electrical goods and machine appliances being diverted into its own markets.

Comments:

Was all good with Brussels when their high tariffs kept Chinese junk diverted to the USA. Now they sweat about the EU filling up with .99 cent stores.

Congress, including some Republicans, are looking at passing a law that gives them some say on tariffs, where the president would have to submit justification for a tariff. People should just leave this president alone and see what happens.

Not in the short term, for certain. Not likely that home appliances will be "diverted" from the USA to Europe. US appliances use 120 volt power at 60 cycles AC. European appliances use 240 volts with 50 cycles AC. The 50 cycle/60 cycle issue is not important to some items, but for anything with a big motor, say refrigerator or clothes washer, the difference in AC frequency will fry the motor, quickly. And plugging a 120 volt item into 240 volts will INSTANTLY fry it into useless junk. Perhaps they will convert their assembly lines, but sure as heck won't be "diverting" US spec electrical appliances to Europe.

They don't ship unless they have a buyer. Or, a cheap place to store/warehouse items. If they think it's to divert then ship from the EU to the US to avoid the tariffs, Customs would see this on the 10/2 declaration as they know usual buyer/seller. If you are CTPAT certified you likely don't want to jeopardize that designation either.

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. has temporarily barred a lower court’s order to return Maryland man Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, an alleged MS-13 gang member involved in human trafficking who was deported to an El Salvador mega prison, to the United States by Monday at midnight. Roberts issued an administrative stay, immediately halting the Federal judge’s demand for Abrego Garcia’s return. Abrego Garcia was deported on March 15, 2025, during a mass deportation operation that targeted nearly 240 alleged members of Latin American gangs.

A hefty 54% tax imposed by President Donald Trump on imports from China poses an existential crisis for San Francisco's Chinatown businesses, which have just started to bounce back after pandemic losses. Nany Yu travels to China every April to meet with suppliers and manufacturers. This time, a lot is riding on the trip as she hopes to strike a deal to avoid passing the high import tax. Everything in her gift shop comes direct from overseas. In the past, Chinatown businesses found a tariff workaround by having suppliers send goods to Vietnam, Latin America, or Africa. Now, with President Trump's sweeping tariffs across the globe, they have fewer options.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is already collecting over $200 million per day in extra revenue as it enforces a massive new wave of tariffs under President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" plan. "CBP has successfully implemented 13 tariff-related presidential actions during this Administration," a CBP spokesperson said in a statement to FOX Business. "Serving on America’s frontline, CBP strictly enforces all laws and Presidential directives to secure our economic sovereignty." Using powers under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the Trump administration is targeting goods from dozens of countries, including China.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday said that he is taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders and to restrict any further issuance to prevent entry into the United States. A federal appeals court reinstated a lawsuit against a Northern California school district by a mother who was not told that her 11-year-old child had identified as transgender. The court did not say whether the district had violated the mother’s rights, however, and instead set guidelines for the judge who had previously dismissed the suit. While the Supreme Court has upheld “the fundamental right of parents to make decisions concerning the care, custody, and control of their children,” that right “is not unlimited,” said the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court told U.S. District Judge Mendez to determine whether rights claimed were “deeply rooted in this nation’s history"

In a post on X, Newsom addressed the U.S.'s global trading partners, writing "California is here and ready to talk." It comes after a Fox News report revealed that Newsom is directing his state to pursue "strategic" relationships with countries announcing retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., urging them to exclude California-made products from those taxes.

Iran has ordered its military personnel to leave Yemen amidst the ongoing US bombing campaign in the country, The Telegraph reported on April 3. The newspaper’s source added that regime officials’ concerns over the Trump administration have eclipsed discussions on Tehran’s regional proxies, dominating every meeting and sidelining previous strategic priorities. The move is part of a broader pattern of the Islamic Republic recalibrating its regional strategy in response to the Trump administration’s efforts to curtail Tehran’s influence in the Middle East and threats to potentially strike Iran’s nuclear sites.

In court filings, federal officials said Tuesday that a federal judge in Massachusetts does not have jurisdiction to decide whether Rümeysa Öztürk was illegally detained by ICE agents last week. This, according to the Justice Department, is because Öztürk was not in Massachusetts when a legal challenge was filed against the federal government. Öztürk, a Turkish PhD student at Tufts University, was arrested by plainclothes federal agents on a Somerville sidewalk last week. She was swiftly moved to a detention center in Louisiana. The Trump administration revoked her visa, apparently because she “engaged in activities in support of Hamas.” Federal prosecutors (snip) argued that the case belongs in immigration court.

President Donald Trump is more popular now than before he sent the global markets into a frenzy by enacting sweeping new tariffs. An exclusive DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners survey of over 1,000 registered voters conducted from March 31 to April 3 found that the Republican remains largely popular in the U.S. The poll found that Trump's approval rating rose to 53 percent, a 4-point increase over last week when it was 49 percent. Trump's rising approval rating is surprising given the flak the White House has received over the tariff order signed Wednesday. It is up by 13 points since March 7 among those aged 18 to 29.
