Trump says he ‘couldn’t care less’
if auto prices rise because of tariffs

Original Article

Posted By: earlybird, 3/30/2025 11:44:12 AM

President Donald Trump said Saturday he doesn’t care if automakers hike prices because of his tariffs. In fact, he encouraged them to. Asked by NBC News’ Kristen Welker in a phone interview about whether he pressured automakers to avoid raising prices after his 25% tariffs on imported cars and parts go into effect, Trump denied that he told CEOs to control costs.“No, I never said that,” Trump told Welker. “I couldn’t care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American cars.”

Comments:

The headline about his not caring if prices go up is not accompanied by a mention of his rationale. He's talking about imported cars from foreign manufacturers (the photos accompanying these articles usually show masses of Mercedes) or American cars manufactured elsewhere. He wants Americans to buy Amerian-made crs that use American-made parts.

One car for the Chihuahua household. We plan accordingly. It works. Save money that way. The Lady Chihuahua and I purchased a new car at the height of the pandemic. Cost only 16k. Quite possibly the only benefit during the entire pandemic. Will we ever buy a new car in the future? Depends on what they cost and how much we are willing to pay. As for CNN, I smell a hit piece and treat it for what it is.

For the tariffs to be really effective the price of imported automobiles must rise. You can continue to buy a Toyota without expecting a tariff to raise its price if it is made in the USA with parts made in the USA. The main purpose of a tariff is to promote the production of things in the USA. Most, or all, other nations have used tariffs to discourage purchase of things made in the USA in order to protect their own industries. We would also hope enough things continue to be imported to generate revenue to support our government so we can reduce or eliminate income taxes. That is largely how the government was funded when this nation was founded. Not matching that practice with tariffs is very short sighted.

The price of cars has been rising steadily every since the democrats started devaluing the money over 100 years ago. I bought my latest new one in 2023 expecting even more rises, which have happened. By the time this one wears out I will probably be too old to drive.

I was baffled at headline until I looked at the source. The rising prices that we have seen in new cars over the past twenty years is the obligation to pay for government-required toys and "safety" features that few people want but are forced to pay for. If you can read a map, use a tire gauge, stay between the lines and back up without using a camera you can save thousands.

As other posters mentioned. One of my Toyotas was built in Kentucky and the other in Tennessee. I doubt if someone able to buy a Ferrari is going to worry about an increased tariff. Some foreign owned plants will also build here to avoid the tariff. Cheap Chinese Krep cars will also be hit hard. I would think the Temu execs are also staying up nights.

“Small minds are concerned with the extraordinary, great minds with ordinary,” philosopher Blaise Pascal wrote. How do we make sense of this striking assertion? It seems to contradict common sense. Aren’t the greatest minds concerned with the greatest events, theories, ideas, and visions, not the insignificant details of daily life? Pascal’s surprising statement deserves a closer examination, a teasing apart in order to discover the wisdom within. Great minds understand the importance of the ordinary. After all, much of life consists of the ordinary. (snip), to discard mundane moments as unimportant would be a great mistake and lead us to believe that the bulk of our lives is meaningless.

It’s not entirely clear if he was real or fictional. Most historians believe he was probably real, but it’s tricky to verify: The legend of Lucius Cincinnatus was (enthusiastically) retold in Titus “Livy” Livius’ book, the “History of Rome,” which was written a few decades before Christ. Unquestionably, Livius’ book included real, verifiable, historic events, but it also included the mythology of the Trojan War and tales of magical twins suckled by a she-wolf. But the legend of Lucius Cincinnatus still endures. He’s even the namesake of an American city in southwest Ohio. And his story continues to influence kings, queens, emperors, and (yes) even U.S. presidents.
