As Robert F. Kennedy Jr. settles into his role as President Donald Trump’s health secretary, one major promise he’s made is still on table - banning pharmaceutical ads.
Kennedy has been a longtime critic of the promotion of drugs on TV, and others high up in Trump’s cabinet and advisorship have agreed in recent months.
Drug advertising on TV
The backstory:
Up until the mid-1980s, pharmaceutical companies gave information about their products only to doctors and pharmacists. Later that decade, some drug companies began giving the general public more direct access to the information, according to the FDA, leading to the advertising that we see on TV today.

You mean those 60 second ads for Merquizofabl where the last 30 seconds is some speed talker listing all the toxic side effects?

Fine with me. I never know what the drug is supposed to do, and all the side-effects at the end - who would take it after that!!

This now-retired physician believes this is well overdue. While not having an 'expert' patient demand some advertised drug may be a good thing - as long as pharmaceutical reps continue to push the unproven benefits of their new (and expensive) miracle drugs I'm not sure the absence of TV ads will matter much. Doctors are always busy and when the 'ad' walks into their office with NEWS, sadly most docs take what their told without thinking critically.

These ads are NOT what you think they are.
They are a revenue stream to the networks that are essentially protection money that discourages the networks to report on anything negative about the companies that pay for the ad placements. Ie., it is bribery. It ensures that the media will not REPORT on the jabs, the horrid side effects of statins, the scant evidence that is required to gain FDA approvals, and the prevalence of anti-psych meds being consumed by mass shooters.
Only two nations on earth allow these ads. USA and New Zealand.

Oh No! Now all the commercials on Fox are going to be the stupid ads about using the right car seat and not texting while driving! They already show the same commercials 3 times in a row now it will be 6 or 7.

I’ve literally seen ads for class action lawsuits against certain meds appear on TV immediately following pharmaceutical ads promoting them. Could we please get both banned? They’re so annoying.

Works for me. Also, while it has nothing to do with drugs, how about ban the Liberty Mutual ads, too.

This is the way it used to be until money started changing hands. Things like this should be decided by the Doctors, not the patient.

I like it. The drug ads, with a cast of hundreds dancing in the street and a long list of side effects, are very annoying. Then, if your doctor prescribes them, you find out they are very expensive and beyond your budget.

I’m all for that, as 15 minutes after viewing those TV drug advertisements, the average Americans does not have a clue or remember the substance of what was announced in the advertisements.

If you can't buy it over the counter, they shouldn't be able to advertise it.
Pharmaceutical companies spend almost twice as much on advertising as they do on R&D.

Not gonna happen. The Supreme Joke, long ago and far away ruled advertisements are protected free speech. Lawyers anyone? Tobacco isn't advertising because of a legal deal with states long ago. But they could if they wanted. Alcohol, lawyers, doctors, rubbers and so much more is all protected as free speech. I don't care for the drug ads but I believe in the 1st Amendment more than my distain for drug ads.

I'm old enough to remember when the cable companies first became available, it was enough for you to pay your monthly charge. Now it has progressed to see the show for 5 minutes, see the commercials for 5 minutes, etc. etc. on through the hour. So tiresome. And the cost of cable continues to go up.

Not true.
Cigarette advertising was banned on television and radio in the United States due to the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act, which was signed into law by President Nixon on April 1, 1970.
