The Department of Veterans Affairs is planning an “aggressive” reorganization that includes cutting 80,000 jobs from the sprawling agency that provides healthcare for retired military members, according to an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press.
The VA’s chief of staff, Christopher Syrek, told top level officials at the agency that it had an objective to cut enough employees to return to 2019 staffing levels of just under 400,000.
That would require terminating tens of thousands of employees after the VA expanded during the Biden administration, as well as to cover veterans impacted by burn pits under the 2022 PACT Act.
The memo instructs top-level staff to prepare for an agency-wide reorganization

ASA's stranded astronauts have put on a brave face throughout their uncertain nine-month stay on the International Space Station - but that appeared to slip in a recent interview.
Barry Wilmore seemed to suggest he and his crewmate Sunita Williams had been caught up in political games in Washington.
SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk, whose spaceflight company was tasked with bringing Williams and Wilmore home later this month, has repeatedly said the Biden administration 'abandoned' them for 'political reasons.'
Musk has also said that former president Joe Biden rejected his offer to bring the astronauts home early because it would've made Donald Trump and his supporters 'look good.'

The White House Presidential Personnel Office is staffing President Donald Trump’s administration at a rapid pace, even as candidates go through a thorough vetting process, including a measurement of “loyalty” to the president.
The personnel office, which is in charge of recruiting, vetting, and recommending candidates to fill the president’s 4,000 political appointees, including the 1,600 Cabinet officials and other nominees who require confirmation in the Senate, filled more than 1,300 executive branch vacancies on the president’s first day in office.
According to three PPO officials, granted anonymity by the Washington Examiner to discuss internal matters, Trump had extended 2,000 offers to possible hires as of Tuesday,

On Wednesday morning, in a 5-4 emergency decision, the Supreme Court upheld a decision from U.S. District Judge Amir Ali that essentially says that Donald Trump can't withhold $2 billion in USAID money from existing contractors. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett sided with the three liberal members of the court. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh voted in favor of Trump, with Justice Alito writing the lengthy dissent that begins with: Does a single district-court judge who likely lacks jurisdiction have the unchecked power to compel the Government of the United States to pay out (and probably lose forever) 2 billion taxpayer

Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives will question the mayors of four of the country's largest cities on Wednesday about their so-called "sanctuary city" laws, which restrict local officials in helping enforce federal immigration regulations.
The Republicans who lead the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have long criticized such laws, as has U.S. President Donald Trump, a Republican who returned to the White House in January promising to deport more unauthorized immigrants than his predecessors. The committee has invited the mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver and New York City, all Democrats, to explain and defend the laws during a televised hearing at 10 a.m.

President Donald Trump is proving once again why he’s the king of slashing government waste and draining the swamp.
In a blockbuster report from Bloomberg, the Trump administration has unveiled plans to unload a massive portfolio of 443 federal properties across 47 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico—properties bloated with bureaucracy, including the headquarters of the DOJ, FBI, and even the General Services Administration (GSA) itself.
The General Services Administration (GSA) disclosed a list of 443 “non-core” assets, encompassing a mix of prime commercial spaces that currently serve as regional hubs for various federal agencies.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) said in a release that it has identified more than $800 million in savings or “cost avoidance” for fiscal 2025 among information technology, grants, property and payroll.
The SSA stated that it froze hiring and “drastically” cut back on overtime, saving about $550 million.
The government agency that administers the Social Security program said it cut back $150 million from the information technology systems (ITS) budget by canceling “non-essential contracts and identifying reductions in other ITS contracts.”
Acting SSA Commissioner Lee Dudek said Monday evening the agency has “operated on autopilot” for far too long.

He cited the Wall Street Journal to criticize Trump, and call his decision 'dumb.'
'Donald, they point out that even though you are a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do,' he said angrily at a press conference on Tuesday.
Imports from Canada will now be taxed at 25 percent as Trump's tariffs went into effect on Tuesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote a message directed at President Trump on Tuesday after the US paused military aid to Ukraine, saying, “It is time to make things right.”
“Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive,” Zelensky wrote on X.
The Ukrainian president had come to Washington on Friday expecting to sign a minerals deal with the US, but left the White House with no deal
