New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced a slew of resignations this week. It’s called into question whether he can govern the city, which is why Gov. Kathy Hochul is holding a series of meetings on the subject. It could end with her removing Adams from office, though the mayor said he isn’t going anywhere.Just four days ago, it was reported that Hochul isn’t rushing to decide on Adams, even though the circumstances surrounding the Department of Justice dropping their case against Mr. Adams has reportedly shaken Hochul. Still, we know it's all an act:

". . .the mayor and the Justice Department had struck a corrupt bargain to shield him from further prosecution." If things are as stated above, at least he'd be shielded from prosecution of an already alleged crime; it's not like it's a blanket pardon for who knows what. Who did that, you ask? Remember all those pardons of shady individuals by faux president jello for crimes yet to be identified? Yeah, you remember.

Hochul has never troubled herself with the well being of any of her constituents. It is her well being that’s at stake here. New Yorkers are as fed up as the rest of the country with the invasion of freeloading illegal immigrants and rampant crime. The optics of trying to remove a black mayor for vowing to help clean it up is about as politically risky as it gets. And it won’t stop the deportations.

On Friday, the not-so-surprising news sailed across the transom that President Trump’s Department of Justice moved to dismiss the five-count bribery case against New York City’s fun-loving Mayor Adams. The DOJ cited concerns that the charges were retribution against Adams for criticizing the Biden administration’s immigration policies — and that they “improperly interfered with Mayor Adams’ campaign in the 2025 mayoral election.” Indeed, the DOJ letter stipulates that Adams’s case will be reviewed again by prosecutors after November’s ballot.

As anticipated, President Donald Trump has ramped up his maximum pressure sanctions campaign on the Iranian regime. Trump was concerned that the Biden administration had softened the American approach to the oppressive theocratic regime, enabling it to increase its oil production revenues. Tehran’s oil exports brought in $53 billion in 2023 and $54 billion in 2022, according to US Energy Information Administration estimates, and output during 2024 was reckoned to be running at its highest level since 2018, based on OPEC data.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday night didn’t rule out removing Mayor Eric Adams from office after allegations emerged that the feds would drop their criminal case against Hizzoner in exchange for his help with President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Hochul, the only official in the state who has the power to boot Adams from his position, revealed on MSNBC that she’s consulting with officials about the mayor’s future. The governor told host Rachel Maddow that she read a letter penned by now-former acting Manhattan US Attorney Danielle Sassoon that claimed Adams’ legal team offered a “quid pro quo” in hopes of seeing his federal charges get dismissed.

The Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas and other Palestinians on October 7, 2023 could have been released a long time ago had the Biden administration exerted pressure on Qatar to use its good relations with the Islamist group to force it to do so. All Qatar had to do was to summon the Hamas leaders in Doha and give them an ultimatum to release all the hostages immediately or face deportation from the Gulf state. It is hard to see how the Hamas leaders would have been able to say no to their major political and financial patrons and backers.... The Qataris were never under the slightest pressure.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced Monday that some $4.7 trillion in payments from the Treasury Department were missing a critical tracking code which made tracing the transactions “almost impossible.” The transactions were reportedly missing the Treasury Account Symbol, or TAS, an identification code which links a Treasury payment to a budget line item, according to DOGE, which described the use of such code as a “standard financial process.” “In the Federal Government, the TAS field was optional for ~$4.7 Trillion in payments and was often left blank, making traceability almost impossible,” read an X post from DOGE.

To paraphrase Ernest Hemingway, there are two ways to descend into autocracy: gradually and then suddenly. Right now, we are on the bullet train. With President Trump in office only a month, many say his “shock and awe” campaign — issuing executive orders to abolish birthright citizenship, defund national health, invade sensitive Treasury payment systems, shutter USAID, impound funds allocated by Congress, fire civil servants and the like — puts us well on the road to autocracy. And the presence of his satrap, billionaire Elon Musk, makes even Republicans nervous and underscores the anxiety over where we are headed. The Democrats are stunned, wringing their hands.
