Will it help stave off a potential Armageddon?
NASA is training humanity’s most powerful telescope on a “city-killing” asteroid to determine whether or not we need to brace for deep impact.
Dubbed 2024 YR4, the building-sized space rock reportedly has a 1-in-43 chance of slamming into Earth in 2032 — up from about 1%, the Independent reported.
The asteroid was discovered by NASA in December and is reportedly at the top of NASA’s watch list when it comes to hazards from beyond. (Photo) With this “time-critical” threat potentially on our doorstep, the space agency has enlisted the aid of the James Webb telescope to study 2024 YR4 and gauge how much

Hmmm. 1 in 43 is 2.3% chance of hitting the planet. AND....since we are 75% water, high probability to hit in the ocean somewhere. THAT will be one hell of a splash and tsunami.
Living in Kansas, I will do exactly nothing beyond praying if it looks like it will hit.
If I lived anywhere within 10-15 miles of a large body of water, like ocean or Great Lakes, I'd arrange to be 'on vacation in the mountains' on that day.
IMO, a tsunami could cause way more widely distributed damage than a dirt impact, and if it hits, a water impact is very likely......3 out of 4.
But, this is one of those "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can change, and the wisdom to know the difference." sort of things. We cannot change this, most likely. I doubt we can get together a 'mission' like in several movies.
Stay away from water on that day, far away. And since large scale evacuations ALWAYS result in total, unfixable gridlock, leave at least a week early.

If I lived in Hawaii, I'd visit the top of Mauna Loa a couple of days before, with camping gear and plenty of food for a couple of weeks. At 13,700 feet above the ocean, likely to remain dry in a splashdown in the Paciic....the largest ocean, so the most likely place to hit.

I have to take this with the proverbial grain of salt, as it was just a couple of weeks ago that some astronomy group hailed the discovery of a new asteroid, only to then discover it was Musk's old Tesla roadster that SpaceX shot into space (complete with a space-suited mannikin in the driver's seat) as ballast for a rocket they were testing.
I'm not saying that the asteroid that this article is about is Musk's old Tesla, I'm just saying that the situation has a lot of uncertainty right now.

The odds are it would hit the ocean so that would be a Tsunami.

Size and orbit will be getting more accurately known, and it is still 7years out. I'll be over 80 if I make it.
Not worried.

They need money to land a man on an asteroid for closer observation.

I'm surprised that DM hasn't had a banner headline---
:"Chances of Killer Asteroid Increase by 230%"
Yep, from 1% chance to 2.3% chance.

I will start worrying about it in 2031, by that time the hit or miss will be certain and I will be 88 years old.

If it happens, I will be 90 (that's a big if) but I don't want the younger people to suffer. Maybe by then, NASA or similar will have the means to divert it.

Have Ben Affleck go up there and blow it up. It is his turn. If Steve Buscemi tries to go with him, stop him.
