STUTTGART, Germany — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Monday while on a C-17 aircraft en route to Germany signed a memorandum renaming “Fort Liberty” back to “Fort Bragg” — the original name of the storied military base in North Carolina.
In a short video posted on X of him signing the memo, he said, “There it is. Pursuant to the authority of the Secretary of Defense, Title 10, United States Code § 113, I direct the Army to change the name of Fort Liberty, North Carolina, to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. That’s right — Bragg is back!'” (X Video) However, the name change now honors Army Private First Class

Great news. This fort has a lot of history for the Rangers.

Please rename Fort Cavazos back to its historical name: Fort Hood, Texas. Nobody knows Biden's new name, and still call it Fort Hood. No soldiers have been dispatched anywhere from Fort Cavazos.

FTA: "the name change now honors Army Private First Class Roland L. Bragg, a World War II veteran awarded the Silver Star and not the Confederate genera"
Grow a spine, Pete. This renaming crap all came about after the horrific, racist George Floyd riots. There was a reason the Union agreed to naming military bases in the South after Confederate Generals. It was about UNITY of the nation, not division. Not only that, but we've known them as such for many generations. It's OUR HISTORY and there's NOTHING to be ashamed about!

I'm not sure I understand the switcheroo, but I guess it's a tactic to keep the left from changing the name in the future. I grew up near Ft. Bragg; the name never left my lips. Fort Liberty was just dumb.

I like the idea of honoring PFC Bragg, but there was nothing wrong with honoring Braxton Bragg, nor Hood, nor Benning. Cow-towing to despicable garbage revisionists is the REAL Problem!

Yeah, it is kind of halfhearted. But half a heart is better than none. Now rebuild all the statues torn down by the Obidenbama vandals.

That’s a cop-out, Pete. Get a stronger spine and change it back to Braxton Bragg for all of the right reasons.

Surely the worst renaming was making Fort Lee in Virginia Fort Gregg-Adams.

Fine with me. Braxton Bragg wasn't a good general at all. The confederates had some excellent generals, Stonewall Jackson and Nathan Bedford Forrest but they'll never have a base named after them.

Everybody who made it through training at Bragg should be the people with the final say. Just because some generals ended up on the losing side does not make them bad men. Robert E. Lee was one of the best we had.

I just find I knee-jerk call it "Fort Liberty-Biberty" all the time, and it's a concept, not a human. However, I never did like naming the place after Braxton Bragg. I figured that out in 1971 when I was assigned there and looked him up.
Robert E. Lee was a great general and a great human being who had devoted a whole career to U.S. Army before deciding his ultimate loyalty lay with Virginia, not with either the Federate or Confederate political entities. Virginia, after all, was older than both, his family had been living there longer than both existed, and the whole concept of national loyalty (as we now understand "nation") was an historically new one.
#1, the Rangers history belongs to Fort Benning (now Fort Moore - he of the 1st Cav Div in Viet Nam). Fort Bragg is the home of US Special Forces (Green Berets), and of their shared higher headquarters, US Army Special Operations Command .
#2, but think of the nickname for Fort Cavazos: "Fort Cav". Can't beat it, even with Hood's Texas Brigade.
As I understand it, Lee was not thrilled with either Bragg or Hood (the men).

Not a great move. Everyone knows it was named after Braxton Bragg, who was a lousy general. Disliked by his troops, and didnt win battles. If the Army wants to set naming conventions for their bases, name them after victorious battles or MoH winners. There's at least one Green Beret MoH winner that I know of who it could be named for.

According to unnamed sources, when Diaper Joe was told of the change of name back to Bragg, he said, 'What idiot change the name in the first place?' He then when back to his daily intelligence briefing delivered by Big Bird according to (nursing) aids.

As an "Army Brat",....I lived at Fort Bragg with my Army family. I remember it well. I went to school in 12 different states and 2 foreign countries before I finished high school. Good experience. Travel is a good education.

Bragg was not a good general. To be somewhat fair, he suffered from incapacitating migraine headaches which may have affected his performance.
Forrest was supposed to have told Bragg, if true, in what was the pinnacle of insubordination speeches in history:
"I have stood your meanness as long as I intend to. You have played the part of a damned scoundrel, and are a coward, and if you were any part of a man I would slap your jaws [sic] and force you to resent it. You may as well not issue any more orders to me, for I will not obey them, and I will hold you personally responsible for any further indignities you endeavor to inflict upon me. You have threatened to arrest me for not obeying your orders promptly. I dare you to do it, and I say to you that if you ever again try to interfere with me or cross my path, it will be at the peril of your life".
The scene did not last longer than a few minutes, and when Forrest had finished he turned his back sharply upon Bragg and stalked out of the tent towards the horses. As they rode away Dr. Cowan remarked, “Well, you are in for it now!” Forrest replied instantly, “He’ll never say a word about it; he’ll be the last man to mention it; and, mark my word, he’ll take no action in the matter. I will ask to be relieved and transferred to a different field, and he will not oppose it.”
