President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order requiring most federal employees to return to work in person full time, a move that is likely to spark backlash and legal challenges from unions.
WHAT DOES TRUMP'S ORDER DO?
Trump directed the heads of all federal agencies to "take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements" and require employees to report to "their respective duty stations" full time. The two-sentence order says the directive "shall be implemented consistent with applicable law."
CAN TRUMP PROHIBIT FEDERAL EMPLOYEES FROM WORKING REMOTELY?
It depends. The president has broad authority over the federal workforce, including the power to tell agencies to stop allowing remote work for employees

The employee's time is bought and paid for by the pay they receive from their employer, which is us. Being on the job at a certain location is not too much to ask. One more thing, if an employee is not productive or a malcontent, the employee should be fired, the union be damned. In addition, if ever there is a union to be busted, it would be the Federal Employees Union. IMHO, of course.

And now for something completely different…as a former government worker I can attest to the value of remote working. I was always an office worker, my work was supervised as needed and there were standards to meet.
Some were quantifiable as in the number of actions taken, approving or disapproving the assigned work…insurance industry forms requiring approval prior to selling them to our state residents. There is an average number week in week out that can be tracked.
Once the work was assigned it was handled from start to finish with virtually no oversight as we were trained to follow the laws and regulations pertinent to the insurance industry.
Once computer based submissions were the norm vice the earlier paper ones, 100% of the approval process from start to finish was on the computer then sent via the internet any correspondence including an eventual approval letter.
There was no reason for a commute, parking arrangements, lunch in or out of the office, office attire…I and my contemporaries were just as “oversighted” remotely as if we were in person.
It’s that simple…

I'm working as a Contractor to the Federal Government, and our groups productivity has greatly increased since we are working remotely. It's easier to get work done without people stopping by to visit and getting drug into worthless meetings where I have zero input.

I agree with #2, BUT I would bet there are a large number of govt employees that are "working" remote that are sitting on their behinds doing nothing for their pay.

My son works remotely. It works incredibly well for employer and employees. The EMPLOYER wants it and that is the difference here. The employer in this case is saying get back to the office.

Just tell them, this job requires your physical presence in the office five days per week. If you don't comply, your paychecks will stop.

Since President JFK issued Executive Order 10988 to gave federal employees the right to join unions, Trump could just over ride it.

Remote work isn't as negative as one might think but it does need to be monitored.
Most unions have all sorts of rules they need to abide by or they can be "written up". Can't be late, need to work the prescribed hours, etc...
The interesting part will be whether the Biden department heads had the legal authority to extend the work from home rules which I believe were extended in December 2024 just to prevent Trump from bringing them back in-office.
