President Joe Biden bade 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue adieu in a roughly 18-minute long Oval Office address Wednesday evening, five days before his predecessor and 2020 general election opponent, President-elect Donald Trump, is set to take office. In his final address to the American people, Biden thanked the public for the honor of serving as president and wished Trump “success,” before pivoting to an ominous message about the alleged threat posed by a newly ascendant American oligarchy. “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights, the freedoms and the fair shot for everyone to get ahead,” Biden said.

We noted here that CNN and Jake Tapper are on trial in Florida, in a defamation case brought by former serviceman Zachary Young. Young helped people escape from Afghanistan; CNN smeared him as an “illegal profiteer” operating within a “black market.” Apparently it is now conceded that this was false. Young alleges that CNN’s smear destroyed his business.
We noted in the post linked above, at the jury selection stage, that there were six prospective jurors who said they think CNN purveys fake news, and only one who said he regularly watched CNN. The trial is now nearing its conclusion, and things have not gotten better for the cable network:

One of Hollywood’s worst weeks in just got worse. David Lynch, the four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Wild at Heart, The Elephant Man and others who also created the Showtime drama Twin Peaks, has died. He was 78.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis announced Thursday that Florida attorney general Ashley Moody will fill the Senate seat vacated by Senator Marco Rubio, who is expected to be confirmed in the coming days as President-elect Donald Trump’s secretary of state.
DeSantis’s announcement is expected to set off a chain reaction among Florida Republicans as the governor’s mansion and the attorney general office open up in 2026. DeSantis is expected to select his chief of staff James Uthmeier to replace Moody as AG, according to Axios.

Several of Donald Trump’s most important cabinet nominees have now undergone confirmation hearings. I have watched them live in bits and pieces as I have been able, and have seen many clips posted here and elsewhere. Some obvious common threads emerge.
First, Trump’s nominees have uniformly done well. Pete Hegseth, Pam Bondi, Marco Rubio and Chris Wright have all come across as competent and likable, in contrast to most of their Democratic interlocutors, who have been shrill at best, and often dim-witted. (My favorite moment so far might be when the bizarre Mazie Hirono asked Pam Bondi whether she had ever made any unwanted sexual advances. Bondi’s puzzlement was understandable.)
