Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages during the first phase of an emerging ceasefire agreement being finalized by negotiators in Doha, two Israeli officials said, the first positive sign in months that a truce in the Israel-Hamas war may be in sight. Officials have expressed cautious optimism that a deal could soon be announced to halt 15 months of fighting that has destabilized the Middle East and devastated Gaza, allow for more aid into the besieged Palestinian enclave, and ensure the return of dozens of hostages held by Hamas since its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Comments:

I don't understand how "release all the hostages before I take office" has turned into elease 33 hostages one by one some of whom may be dead and no promises re the others and the price of this is give up israelie security" This is all Witkoff could get with Trump standing behind him? What a terrible deal.

Halt the fighting and provide (long term) security to Israel? How can those two phrases be uttered in the same sentence? I hope Netanyahu does not negotiate away everything gained through fifteen months of fighting.

What a bunch of morons. The Middle East has been destabilized for the past 80 years when somebody thought it would be wise to trade weapons to the camel jockies in exchange for their oil. There are no 33 hostages. Please, IDF, kill the rest of the murdering filth and give Gaza back to Israeli citizens. As long as people allow terrorists to hide in their midst, there will never be peace.

I feel for the hostages but I want the perpetrators of this atrocity wiped from the face of the earth. Wrap their corpses in pigskin and publicly bury them as a lesson to the remaining murderous animals. Get the hostages back then the Mossad can hunt the vile b******s down one by one and kill them like they did to the Munich Islamic savages..

This is a pathetic compromise, but as Calvin from "Calvin and Hobbes" fame said: A compromise means everybody's unhappy!" (or something to that effect). With that said, the Israeli I follow on Telegram is blaming TRUMP for this. No, Israel, blame yourself! If you don't like the terms of the compromise, then REJECT IT--even it that means you get the raw end of the deal. I've been saying for years now that Israel needs to STOP relying on their little "g" god U.S.A. and start relying on the One True God, the one who watches over them--and protects them (when they let Him).

FTA: “ Israel launched its war on Hamas in Gaza following the attacks of October 7, 2023, in which around 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage. Since then, the Israeli military has killed at least 46,565 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. More than 100,000 have been injured.” What a load of tripe, par for the course from CNN. Israel’s war? And note how they specifically state how many Palis Israel has killed, but use the passive voice to deflect who killed and captured innocent Israelis. And regurgitating the Pali “Ministry of Health” numbers? How about instead writing “Hamas launched the current war on 10/7/23 when it invaded Israel, killing 1200 people and taking 250 hostages.”

More information now on how a potential ceasefire deal would look. Revealing some potential details of the agreement, a Palestinian official told the BBC that "the detailed technical discussions took considerable time". Both sides agreed that Hamas would release three hostages on the first day of the agreement, after which Israel would begin withdrawing troops from populated areas. Seven days later, Hamas would release four additional hostages, and Israel would allow displaced people in the south to return to the north, but only on foot via the coastal road.

(Reuters) - A U.S. government weather forecaster expects an about 60% chance of the La Nina weather pattern characterized by unusually cold temperatures in the Pacific Ocean emerging in the second half of 2024. There is an 85% chance that a transition from El Niño to ENSO-neutral is likely to occur by April-June, National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said in a monthly forecast on Thursday. "The end of El Nino would take away the vertical wind shear that tends to reduce the number of storms in the Atlantic basin. Further, warm ocean temperatures should facilitate the formation of stronger storms," Citi Research said in a note.

Imagine a Jan. 6-style crisis, only this time with serious (as opposed to politically manufactured) disagreements over whether the presidential candidate who won a key state is entitled to its electoral votes. That disturbing scenario just became a little bit more likely — not for the next presidential election but subsequent ones. Without fanfare, Minnesota’s governor signed legislation last month that would award the state’s 10 presidential electors to the national popular-vote winner even if he or she lost Minnesota. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact purports to take effect once states carrying 270 electoral votes (the minimum needed to win the presidency) have agreed to its terms.

The report details Smith's decision to bring a four-count indictment against Trump, accusing him of plotting to obstruct the collection and certification of votes following his 2020 defeat by Democratic President Joe Biden. It concludes that the evidence would have been enough to convict Trump at trial, but his imminent return to the presidency, set for Jan. 20, made that impossible.
