Vice President Kamala Harris took aim at insurance companies during a press conference Thursday regarding the tragic, overwhelming wildfires in the Los Angeles region that broke out Tuesday, killing at least 10, destroying thousands of structures and displacing tens of thousands from their homes. The implication from her statement is that some companies abandoned their obligations and canceled policies even as the devastation was unfolding. Spokesfolks for the insurance industry are clapping back at the VP, though, and telling her that she’s ill-informed and is spreading misinformation:

The winds and the fire are acts of nature. But liability for the response to them lies, for sure, mostly with government, the California government. In previous fires, they were told that there was too much brush and deadwood in the forests, and not enough water to fight the fires. The insurance companies recognized that coastal California was a high risk area and they could have difficulty covering claims without more premium income. But the state boards said; what are your trying to do, screw the little guy. Request denied, oh, and policies canceled. No new reservoirs, no filling of existing reservoirs, all political decisions. The first time I set foot in California, in 1959, it had the best roads in the country, the best schools, beautiful forests and wild areas. Times change.

Insurance companies are one of the go-to hate objects of the left. They are a business, not a charity. I find insurance necessary for my house and car. If you don't like them, try not buying their product. If you buy their product, read the policy, and then read it again.

Their obligations were not "abandoned" and policies were not "canceled" - some insurers simply opted to not renew certain policies when they expired. Why? Because the state's insurance laws prohibit them from charging higher premiums for high-risk properties. Ain't socialism great?

#2 Friend lived in LA until maybe 20 years ago (she's 80), said the roads in California were the best in the nation. She now goes out every year to visit family and says there are potholes you could lose a car in. Is anyone doing a good job at anything in California?

I spent 43 years in the property and casualty insurance business and the story is spot on. You cannot simply "cancel" a policy midterm. The company has to wait until the renewal date and, in Georgia, give at least 30 days notice that it will not be renewed. All you hear from these irresponsible politicians attacking the industry is the word "cancel". The real problem in California is a hostile business climate. It is extremely difficult to get a rate increase approved, and all you hear from the posturing politicians is about "greedy" insurance companies. The ones not going broke are leaving the state in droves because of this. California is a huge market, and that's what kept a lot of the companies in the state. It's no longer worth it and, for their own survival, they are throwing in the towel and getting the hell out. I feel sorry for the good citizens of California. Their options for insurance are the state FAIR plan with limited coverage or what we call the non-standard market like Lloyds with brutally high rates.

CA: "You will insure everyone. It doesn't matter how inept we run our state, it does not matter how we make matters worse, and it does not matter that we set the insurance premium rates."

John Stossel Already Debunked the Idea
That Climate Change Caused the California Wildfires

The moment any kind of natural disaster happens, Democrats immediately begin screaming about climate change. Of all the boogiemen the left has in their closet of scary monsters, "climate change" is arguably their most successful as it's allowed the left to use it as a way to frighten people into voting for them, and allowed them to manipulated billions and billions of dollars to their liking. With the California wildfires raging around LA, you can bet the Democrats immediately pointed to climate change as the culprit. Is it? Did the fires start because of the prophesied coming of mother nature's retribution for humanity's hubris and abuse of the planet?

Former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump had what appeared to be a warm conversation Thursday ahead of former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, but a professional lip reader told The Post their smiles and laughter belied more serious substance. Trump, 78, possibly wary of cameras facing the pair as they sat shoulder to shoulder, cautioned Obama, 63, that they would have to “find a quiet place” later in the day to discuss a “matter of importance,” according to forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman. It’s unclear what precisely that conversation would entail, but Freeman’s translation indicated that Obama and Trump may have been discussing international agreements.

Actor Mel Gibson and podcaster Joe Rogan ripped into California Governor Gavin Newsom for being unprepared to handle the wildfires tearing through Los Angeles. “The Patriot” actor, 69, appeared on the “Joe Rogan Experience” Thursday, and the two were quick to point out that the Golden State spent billions of taxpayers’ money on homelessness but claimed the state spent “zip” on measures that could have helped prevent the wildfires. “We were just talking about the wildfire situation and how crazy it is that they spent $24 billion dollars last year on the homeless, and what did they spend on preventing these wildfires?” Rogan, 57, asked.

"[M]edia freedoms" have never existed under the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. For many years, the two parties have been imposing restrictions on Palestinian journalists, including a ban on criticizing PA and Hamas leaders. Palestinian journalists and activists who dared to speak out against the PA or Hamas found themselves incarcerated, and sometimes dead. The silence of the international community and the so-called "pro-Palestinian" activists on the university campuses in the US and across the West has only encouraged the PA to dismiss launching an investigation into the killing of al-Sabbagh.

President-elect Donald Trump blamed California’s Gavin Newsom for the ‘apocalyptic’ wildfires ravaging the Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles — claiming he chose to save an extinct tiny fish species, instead of sending more water to southern California. Trump raged that the Democratic governor blocked an order that would have diverted more water from the much wetter north to the state’s parched regions “including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way.”

President-elect Donald J. Trump has warned that unless the hostages being held by Hamas are released by January 20, the day of his inauguration, "all hell will break out." Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is already in Doha, Qatar, negotiating. Not very astonishingly, the negotiations keep breaking down.... The question arises: why is Witkoff in Qatar negotiating? Negotiating for what? How many dead hostages for how many live Palestinian terrorists now in Israeli prisons? Why is Trump's statement, "there will be all hell to pay," not, by itself, the negotiation? It seems that all Witkoff would need to do is detail every name, alive or dead;
