A few lucky Malibu homes are miraculously still standing after they somehow escaped the Palisades Fire as nearly all the neighboring houses were reduced to ash.
Among the charred remains of luxurious million-dollar mansions along the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, only a select few buildings survived after the inferno tore through the exclusive city — and is still burning out of control, aerial photos show.
One massive three-story home overlooking the Pacific Ocean appeared to have avoided significant damage even as rubble-piles of what were once houses still smoldered to its north and south in the wildfire’s wake.

If they survived because they cleaned and cut the underbrush, they will get a big violation fine from the city. Wanna bet???

Trying go stir up some sort of class warfare, East Coast NYP tabloid reporter Reilly may be unaware that most of the beachfront houses are old mostly wood frame structures that have been weathering there for many decades.. Completed in 2000 that "mansion" wjuld be a baby among very elderly beach houses.

What are the construction materials of the surviving homes? Concrete? Cinder block? Fire retardant wood? Tile or metal roofs vs asphalt shingles?

That miles-long strip of Malibu beach along Pacific Coast Highway was built on sand right on the ocean. No underbrush, #1.

One aerial photo that I saw showed a whole area of burned homes with four unburned. Those four had red tile roofs. Coincidence? Probably not.
They likely had the vegetation cut back illegally, too.
Why don't homes out there with swimming pools have gasoline powered pumps from the pools to run roof sprinklers?

#3, this particular home was constructed of stucco and stone. The roof was fireproof.

Just a reminder for those who lost homes, elections have consequences. And even if you still have a home, the insurance companies have pulled out of the state.
How do these homes burn down with a million gallons of water 20' from your back door? Asking for a friend.

Re #8...nobody thought enough to install a pumping system and sprinklers. Ocean water is going to be really hard on the plants, and will have to be rinsed off later with fresh water, unless it rains heavily, but having a salt encrusted home is better than no home at all.

"Million-dollar mansion" is hardly an adequate description for an exclusive residence in California, these days. It's WAY out of date. Twenty-five years ago, I saw an ordinary house in the Bay Area no bigger than my middle-class residence in the South, which sold for $1.3 million. A shack in Malibu, if one existed would probably sell for a million or more.

mel gibson was on the joe rogan podcast. when he got home-the house had burnt to the
foundation and copper piping. he said the house was so perfectly crispy it was as though
it had been done deliberately.
he is pleased that he does not have to worry about the plumbing problems anymore.

#11~ I heard Mel Gibson talking to NewsNation via phone. He said when he returned home after being on Joe Rogan he was surprised to find that his chickens survived the fire. He fed them, gave them water and they're laying eggs. He quipped that he's glad he didn't come home to roast chickens! Given the fact he lost everything he seemed to have the right perspective about it. He categorized a lot of what he lost as simply "stuff".

Gibson is right. It's just stuff. As you and your family and pets are safe, it can be replaced. You may lose some heirlooms, irreplaceable photos etc. and Mel probably has plenty of money, but some of that "stuff" is not something you want to lose. I live in a modest little house, but it's full of valuable mementos to me.
