One of America’s most powerful Democrats is denying he deliberately misled the American public when he touted lame-duck President Joe Biden’s mental acuity last year. Senator Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), the outgoing Senate Majority Leader, defended the legacy of Biden, 81, during an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday where he was confronted on past comments praising Biden’s mental capacity. “His mental acuity is great, it’s fine, it’s as good as it’s been over the years,” Schumer said in a February 2024 press conference that NBC played back to him.

One suspects he's quite used to them, but even for President-elect Donald Trump, Thursday has been a busy day. While he spent the morning, along with his wife Melania, at the funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter and later in the day announcing additional appointments to his incoming administration, a bevy of legal decisions was being made regarding him.
First, the New York Court of Appeals denied his request to stay the sentencing in his Manhattan criminal case (set for Friday morning). Then, the Supreme Court did the same, just as the 11th Circuit denied his co-defendants' efforts to block the release of (former) Special Counsel Jack Smith's "Final Report."

The Los Angeles County Fire Department erroneously sent an evacuation warning text message alert to all of Los Angeles County on Thursday afternoon, inflicting more panic and confusion on an already traumatized public coping with the most damaging fires in Los Angeles history.
The text message was sent at approximated 3:57 PM Pacific time to residents throughout Los Angeles County. It stated: “NEW: This is an emergency message from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. An EVACUATION WARNING has been issued in your area. Remain vigilant of any threats and be ready to evacuate. Gather loved ones, pets, and supplies. Continue to monitor local weather
And I made sure to tell you she was a BLACK LESBIAN right up front because she's so damn proud of it. Historic, even.

Could Donald Trump find himself on the cusp of a truly historic achievement? He's already the second president to serve non-consecutive terms (Grover Cleveland), the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years, and the first president re-elected after an impeachment (and the first to be impeached twice).

Anita Bryant Dry, known popularly Anita Bryant — a singer and crusader against the progress of gay rights — has died at the age of 84, her family announced in an obituary posted Thursday. She died Dec. 16 at her Edmond, Okla., home.

All living former first ladies attended former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Thursday, except Michelle Obama.
Former first lady Michelle Obama did not attend because she reportedly had “scheduling conflicts,” journalist Jeff Zeleny told CNN.
“She’s still in Hawaii,” Zeleny said, underscoring the lack of an open seat next to her husband.
“Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former President,” her spokesperson told reporters. Because of Michelle Obama’s absence, former President Barack Obama sat in between President-elect Trump and former first lady Laura Bush.
The Supreme Court on Thursday denied President-elect Donald Trump’s bid to delay his Friday morning sentencing in the New York hush money case.
The Supreme Court’s order clears the way for Manhattan judge Juan Merchan to impose the long-awaited sentence on the incoming president. Merchan said he would not give Trump jail time, fines, or probation during the virtual hearing. Scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, the sentencing comes ten days before Trump’s inauguration.

Karen Pence refused to acknowledge President-elect Donald Trump and Melania Trumpas they arrived at the Washington National Cathedral Thursday for the funeral of President Jimmy Carter. The former second lady was seated next to her husband, former Vice President Mike Pence, and remained seated as the Trumps arrived.
She made no effort to shake hands with Melania Trump, who she worked hand-in-hand with when their husbands were in office during Trump's first term. Mike Pence shook hands with Donald Trump after former Vice President Al Gore did the same. It was their first public interaction since 2021. Joe Biden is mentally cooked and almost out the door, but he had to do what presidents do during these natural disasters. The wildfires engulfing Los Angeles County is the second inferno Biden has dealt with. He led Maui burn to the ground and took his sweet time visiting the island, whose residents endured the worst wildfire seen in almost a century. The president was briefed on the raging wildfires that have so far killed at least two people, destroyed over 1,000 buildings, forced 70,000 from their homes, and charred close to 30,000 acres. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass became stone-faced when confronted by a reporter as she returned to America to find her city burning Wednesday.
“Do you owe citizens and apology for being absent while their homes were burning, and do you regret cutting the Fire Department budget by millions of dollars madame mayor?” Sky News reporter David Blevins asked as Bass waited to deplane.

Earlier today when I wrote about the wildfires I mentioned that there were reports the hydrants were simply running dry, leaving firefighters no way to battle the flames. Here's Rick Caruso, former candidate for LA mayor, describing the problem. FIle this next clip under "too good to check" but apparently this morning one local LA anchor tried to discount what Caruso was saying only to have a reporter contradict him a minute later. That knee-jerk urge to contradict whatever criticism Democrats are getting is one surefire way the media consistently sets its own credibility on fire.

What was intended to be a somber occasion, however, quickly became charged with tension so thick attendees could feel it in the air.Among the ceremonial obligations to honor the former president, the spectacle of political posturing and strained handshakes was enough to quite the sideshow. It began with President Donald Trump walking past Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau’s side-eye was practically a headline in itself. (X)
Shockingly, the disaster that is the California wildfires has turned political. I know, you didn't see it coming, did you? Stunning. How could something so tragic turn so political so quickly?

Republicans in Congress are already getting to work on trying to implement Donald Trump’s agenda.
Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) this week put forward a joint resolution seeking to limit the number of terms members of Congress can serve.
Under the terms of the amendment, U.S. senators would be restricted to two six-year terms and representatives in the U.S. House to three two-year terms.
According to the resolution, the amendment would take effect within seven years of being approved by Congress and ratified by the states.
We reported earlier on some of the priceless interactions between the various presidents, vice presidents, and their spouses at the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter. We saw President Trump shake hands with his former VP Mike Pence, despite what can only be considered strained feelings between the two these days. There was the chilly interaction between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris, and the ridiculous reason that Michelle Obama wasn't there. There was Joe Biden, looking out of it, as usual. (Snip) But as the funeral went on there was another priceless moment that I had to share -- Kamala Harris' reaction to Barack Obama talking with Trump.
