Friday on Fox News Channel’s “Americas Newsroom,” Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary commented on President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States.
O’Leary said, “More than half of Canadians, there’s 41 million of them, want to know more, want to understand what the proposal really is because the concept of an economic union has been bandied around for 40 years and it makes sense because the resources Canada have, the U.S. needs, particularly power and water. But there’s something else, you know, we’ve been talking about the border between Canada and the United States. That’s not the problem.”

No. Terrible idea. We need to build a border wall on the Canadian border right after the one with Mexico is completed.

I don’t want it either. The US doesn’t need a few million new insanely woke citizens and their garbage socialized medical system.

The idea of Canada and the US "together" is a ridiculous distraction.

I worked with the Canadian military two decades ago. We had interesting conversations. When we were talking about something that included the US system of government, I was quickly reminded that they were NOT a democracy. Canada is a parliament-based socialist country. There's no way to merge them into the US without completely doing away with their form of government, militaries and all forms of their government healthcare systems. This is a nonstarter from the get-go.

We are the most powerful country in the world w/out them
But since we're daydreaming ... why not give all the Countries North of the Panama Canal an opportunity to become territories, with limited voting privledges , all the way North to Greenland.
The rehab and Economic growth would be amazing. English the language. You need to assimilate to our Culture. In return ... Peace and Prosperity

Let Quebec break away and be its own country. We really only want the central and western provinces/territories. The conservative ones will be separate states so each gets 2 Senators. Ontario can be a territory, like Guam. No electoral votes for Trudeau-land.

Small minds. Resistance on this forum is shocking. Canucks will get Americanized in no time, once they realize what free market capitalism is all about. You know, profit and lower taxes.

Kevin, much agree, bro. But let's give President Trump some time to buy Greenland first and go from there.

Adding Canada as a 51st state might be a little better than adding Puerto Rico.

I say we give PuertoRico its independence, Let Hawaii secede. Merge CA, OR, WA into one state along the coast, let the inland portions each become their own state. Split TX into 5 states, split FL into two states. Leave Canada alone, and merge DC back into MD. And then the senate will represent the people better.

I'm not sold, and I'm not not sold.
I like the idea of the additional natural resources, but not at the expense of tens of millions additional woke liberals.
We are cousins, not brothers and sisters.

If we take in Ontario and Quebec the infusion of insane leftists would sink the union. If we got Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Yukon and NW Territories, we'd connect up to Alaska and get a lot of good people, great farmland and make the country stronger.
Beware the insane leftist parts of Canada, they are a poison pill....already poisoning Canada.

When I visited Toronto in ‘95, I was impressed how the Canadians spoke English without that peculiar accents the Brits and the Aussies speak.

Well, who are they?
They are Canadians but they spend much time explaining to Americans they are not British and to the British they are not Americans.
Any merger would be very complicated.
#15 has it right.

It's nonsense. Canadians do not seek to become Americans, nor should they. They wouldn't be very good at it. Canada has enough issues to deal with already. And Americans are already having enough trouble raising their own children to be strong, independent citizens without adding the strain of enculturating 30 million politically naturalized immigrants.
Putting aside the implausibility, #4, #15, and #17 are right on the merits.

So it's the beginning of "North American Union," but under a different name and for supposedly different reasons?
Got it!

Way too many problems. Canadian folks would be immediately eligible for Social Security and Medicare and have never paid into it. Speeches made in congress would have to be in English, Spanish, and French. The RCMP would have to trade in their beautiful uniforms in for Smokey the Bear stuff. We need to be worried about fixing our current problems rather than finding new ones.
