CBS News’ Lesley Stahl is having a bit of heartburn after the 2024 election. Donald Trump is coming back. The GOP retained control of Congress. The media establishment was once again skinned alive by the tens of millions of Americans who rightly rejected, ignored, or outright dismissed their shoddy narratives against Trump and the ones manufactured to prop up Vice President Kamala Harris. So, it’s somewhat laughable that she fears legacy media is dead. Stahl and The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan spoke about the latter’s latest book at the 92NY Center’s Recanati-Kaplan Talks in late November. Stahl relayed a

I've been saying for a long time that the Legacy Media deserves to go out of business. Leslie Stahl knows why that is. They're untrustworthy. What they do is lie for the benefit of Democrats. If entire news divisions were to disappear, Americans would be better informed. Bad product, bad outcome.

The paper #14 mentions is almost identical to mine. Due to the "increasing cost" of maintaining the paper, the owner has pared the daily issues down to almost nothing. Only the Sunday paper was left intact. My assumption is that it's not due to "increased costs" but because they're bleeding readers. Here's the hysterical part ~ they've begun sending emails asking for donations so that "we can continue to deliver the outstanding journalism for which we're known". Doesn't seem as if they've learned a lesson or did any self-reflection at all. Maybe when it's time to shut down the presses for good will they finally get a clue.

The Legacy Media is on a trajectory to extinction. And as is the case in the natural world, every other organization is itching to occupy the soon-to-be-vacant niche. Not just the functional role and relationships of the previous occupants of those niches, but also many of the shady practices exercised by the predecessors. Virtually nothing in the news media can be trusted so implicitly that it doesn't merit back-checking their claims, any more.

Among the 1,500 federal convicts granted clemency was Josephine Virginia Gray, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2002 for insurance fraud schemes connected to the murders of three men between 1974 and 1996. The Wall Street Journal has an article delving into the efforts to cover up Biden’s mental state. But the article raises as many questions as it answers. I won’t dwell on the umpteenth revelations that Biden had bad days, that he had trouble remembering lines or figuring out where he was supposed to go. While preparing last year for his interview with Robert K. Hur, the special counsel who investigated Biden’s handling of classified documents, the president couldn’t recall lines that his team discussed with him. At events, aides often repeated instructions to him, such as where to enter or exit a stage, that would be obvious to the average person…

If anyone in the future cares enough to write an authentic history of the 2024 presidential campaign, they might begin by noting that American politics exists downstream of American culture, which is a deep and broad river. Like any river, American culture follows a particular path, which has been reconfigured at key moments by new technologies. In turn, these technologies, which redefine both space and time—canals and lakes, the postal system, the telegraph, railroads, radio and later television, the internet, and most recently the networking of billions of people in real time on social media platforms—set the rules by which stories are communicated, audiences are configured, and individuals define themselves.

As drone sightings over New Jersey continue to raise questions, a new tool could bring answers about the source of these flying vehicles — if the government could get it off the ground. Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began requiring all unmanned aircraft systems to be equipped with Remote ID technology, which makes every equipped drone uniquely identifiable to authorities, like a license plate on a car. The FAA announced that it would provide a database that could be accessed by local law enforcement, but nearly one year later, local authorities still can't get into it themselves.

At the heart of the Christmas story, nestled in the opening verses of two Gospels, lies the birth of Jesus, the long awaited Messiah. These words speak of a King born not in the grand halls of a world capital, but in the squalor of a manger—a place of vulnerability. As the angels proclaimed peace on earth, humanity was presented with the ultimate paradox: the Prince of Peace, born unexpectedly, in the midst of ongoing war and turmoil. For centuries, the people of Israel had awaited the Messiah. Prophecies spoke of a leader—a descendant of David—who would reign with justice, righteousness, and power, establishing peace and ending war.
