The real key to this story -- he probably was guilty the first time. One of the big hoaxes of our time, seen most often with "political" killers, or those who attract liberal symptahy, is belated (after decades) discovery of marginal evidence which everyone earnestly makes believe should have been tracked down with bloodhounds at the time of the original trial. The "new" evidence isn't dispositive of innocence, often not by a long shot, but a judge nonetheless says it demands a new trial, which . . . can't fairly be held because other evidence is gone, some witnesses dead, etc. So. new trial. The prisoner must be cut loose. Not necessarily "an innocent man freed." Not always the case -- it is heartening to see miscarriages of justice reversed. But often the case too. Miscarriages of justice go both ways.

“Sir, why did you pause LNG exports to Europe?” the speaker asked. “I didn’t do that,” Biden replied. He had, three weeks earlier—but he wasn’t aware of what he’d signed. The Republican speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, has had a front-row seat to the intellectual decline of Joe Biden. On Friday, in an interview with Bari Weiss for Honestly, Johnson shared an anecdote that demonstrated just how checked out the outgoing president has been. During the third week of January 2024, Johnson was invited to a meeting at the Oval Office with several of Biden’s top national security advisers and cabinet chiefs.

Five mental health professionals, some of whom already accused Donald Trump of being “dangerous,” prepared a risk assessment for New York state Judge Juan Merchan to consider in his July 11 sentencing decision on Trump, according to forensic psychiatrist Dr. Bandy X. Lee, a longtime critic of the former president. It isn’t clear whether all five are psychiatrists or may have other training. Their risk assessment could be a factor in the severity of Merchan’s sentence for Trump in Manhattan Criminal Court, which could be up to 20 years in prison for all 34 felony counts on which he was convicted last month.

The goal is to get the Starliner onto the International Space Station for a one-week stay. Then, it will return to Earth and certify its end-to-end capabilities. This time, NASA found one of its four computers operating the launch was lagging behind the others. As all four computers are meant to perform the same function — a delay in one signals a problem.

Chattanooga, Tennessee, is known as “Gig City,” not for its many live music venues, but for its role as the first city in the Western Hemisphere to offer 1 gigabit-per-second fiber internet service to residents and businesses, an honor that it claimed in 2010. In 2024, Chattanooga has come to be representative of a different movement—the labor movement in the South. An overwhelming vote by the city’s Volkswagen employees on April 19 to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union was the first crack in a decades-long barrier holding back the labor movement south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Until now, the Chattanooga facility has been the only non-union Volkswagen plant worldwide.
