Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office has been aggressively pushing for the media to note that if convicted of second-degree manslaughter at trial, Marine veteran Daniel Penny faces no mandatory minimum prison term, Penny's lawyers told the judge this week. The 26-year-old aspiring architect would face a maximum punishment of 15 years behind bars, if convicted for Jordan Neely's death on a Manhattan F train.
Neely rushed onto a subway car with women and children, shouted that someone would "die today," and warned that he wasn't afraid to go to prison for life. Penny grabbed him in a chokehold or headlock, took him to the ground, and he later died.

Conservatives ripped a social media account associated with House Democrats on Tuesday over a deleted post suggesting the economy is strong and seemingly minimizing the struggles of those who have difficulty affording groceries. "And here we were thinking y'all couldnt afford eggs!" the Ways and Means Democrats posted on X on Tuesday with a screenshot of an X post from journalist Paul Brandus that said, "Record air travel, holiday shopping busting records, stock market at all-time highs. The economy is 'the worst ever,' some Pollyannas whine."
The post, which has since been deleted by the Ways and Means Democrats, sparked backlash from conservatives on social media.

It's not a procedure you'd expect a 28-year-old to be planning. But for Lydia Echols from Texas, having her fallopian tubes removed is the price she's willing to pay to ensure her reproductive rights. Newsweek spoke to five women who have either undergone sterilization procedures or plan to in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's victory on November 5. They all expressed fear their reproductive choices will be taken from them under Trump's administration. "If I am to be denied any rights in the next four (or more) years, I will not give them up without a fight," Echols said.

President Biden's decision to use his presidential powers on Sunday to pardon his own son will be a decision that lives in infamy in presidential politics. It is not just that the president used his constitutional powers to benefit his family. It is because the action culminates years of lying to the public about his knowledge and intentions in the influence-peddling scandal surrounding his family. Even among past controversies about the use of this pardon power, Biden has cemented his legacy for many, not as the commander in chief, but as the liar in chief.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is urging NATO leaders to invite Ukraine to join the Western military alliance during a meeting in Brussels next week, according to a letter sent to alliance leaders—reflecting the country's frenzied push to gain membership in the alliance in the final days of Biden's presidency. The letter, first reviewed by Reuters, comes as Ukraine has re-upped its request for NATO membership to help put an end to Russia's war, including a recent uptick in attacks on its energy infrastructure. It also comes as the Biden administration has granted Ukraine new permissions to fight back against Russia in their final months in office.

The mayor of an affluent California coastal community criticized Democratic state lawmakers and expressed frustration over sanctuary state policies he alleges have allowed illegal immigration to flow uninterrupted after 21 migrants were recently taken into custody off the shores near his city. Eighteen of the migrants who were detained a mile off the waters of Newport Beach earlier this month by the U.S. Coast Guard were from Mexico, while two were from Uzbekistan and one was from Russia. They were handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Navy Adm. Samuel Paparo is head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. In Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, he took part in a discussion at the liberal Brookings Institution. Paparo discussed at length the military strength of China — he called it “the most capable potential adversary in the world” — and the challenges facing the United States in countering China’s power in the region.
Paparo also addressed the growing costs of U.S. support of Ukraine, in its war with Russia, and Israel, in its war with Hamas and related organizations. This is from a report in the Defense Department publication defense.gov:

We are witnessing a historic counterrevolution after Trump's victory, far different from his first election in 2016.
The orthodox and the supposed scripted future are now suspect. And they are likely to be dethroned -- from the trivial to the existential.
Critics claim Trump has no mandate to stage such a counterrevolution. They argue that he did not win 51 percent of the popular vote or achieve a Reaganesque landslide in the Electoral College.
Yet all the initiatives he advanced and won on polled landslide public approval. Despite being the target of Democrat lawfare for years, a defiant Trump promised to end an open border, massive illegal immigration, rising crime, and soaring prices.

A mentally challenged President Joe Biden turned 82 years old this week, a much-diminished man from his heyday as a Democratic Party Senate stalwart in the last century. But one part of his character is undimmed by the passage of the years: His legendary spite and gleeful willingness to betray his political foes.
Knowing this, is he now about to set off a third world war to settle an election score with newly re-elected President Donald Trump, who Biden still calls an “existential threat” to America?
We’re talking of course of Biden’s inexplicably dangerous decision to encourage Ukraine to use long-range U.S. missiles against Russian territory, which has already prompted a response

President-Elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth for secretary of defense has sparked predictable criticism, largely centered on claims of inexperience and unpreparedness — entirely from the experts who have been wrong about everything in the defense and foreign policy realm for the past 20 years.
Yet a careful review of Hegseth’s background, paired with historical context and the challenges facing the Department of Defense, demonstrates that he is not only qualified but also uniquely positioned to lead in a time when bold, reform-minded leadership is desperately needed.

Bill O'Reilly offers the view that Comcast and NBC News are "throwing MSNBC overboard," not "selling" it or "spinning it off," on Chris Cuomo's NewsNation show.
BILL O'REILLY: Joe and Mika were ordered to go to Mar-a-Lago by Comcast, the parent company out of Philadelphia. They didn't just show up. And Trump says, "This is great, here they come to kiss my you-know-what, we'll get photo-ops," which they did. But Comcast said you two were going to have to try to mend some fences, you're going to go in there and try to tamp it down. because Comcast knew the next day they were going to announce that MSNBC is vapor.

Yesterday, a madman on a stabbing spree mortally wounded three New Yorkers, who succumbed to their injuries. According to the New York Post and New York Daily News, the alleged perpetrator is a 51-year-old New York City shelter resident with a troubling criminal history that includes at least eight prior arrests—many for felonies—and at least one open case. Once again, New Yorkers find themselves asking the same dismal question suggested by Mayor Eric Adams, who spoke at a press conference after the attacks: What the hell was this guy doing on the street?
