Michelle Obama's voter mobilization campaign is turning to drag queens and free prize draws in a bid to boost voter turnout in key battleground states. The former first lady founded When We All Vote in 2018 and the organization is planning to host 500 'Party at the Polls' events before election day. The events will take place across states including Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada. One such event in Arizona, which took place on October 18, featured Drag Out the Vote, a group of drag performers advocating for LGBTQ+ voters. A student at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, recently filed a Freedom of Information Act request. He was trying to get access to documents related to an ongoing investigation at the school that he's involved in.
Instead of those documents, he was hit with a $84,000 bill. To get the records, he’ll have to pay up. Carrie Uthe, the student’s mother, spoke to reporters on her son’s behalf. They believe the school is using the bill to prevent her son from accessing the records.
“I feel like we’re fighting the school that’s fighting us ... and it’s just not fair,” Uthe told 13 On Your Side reporters.
Taxpayers, not an insurance agency, will pay for the city of Akron's $4.85 million settlement to Jayland Walker's family for Walker's police-involved shooting death, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik.
The city is not insured, so the settlement will come in a series of four payments over four years, he said.
"I imagine that this is something that would have strong feelings, across the board," Malik said of settlement details. "This was something that was done to protect the city's financial interests and to settle the claim."

For the first time in 36 years the Washington Post will not be endorsing a candidate for president, the paper’s publisher announced on Friday in a move that shocked and angered some current and former staffers who have been critical of former president Donald Trump.
Publisher William Lewis announced the decision in an opinion piece on the organization’s website. Lewis said the Post is “returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates,” repeatedly noting that the Post is an “independent newspaper.”
In his piece, Lewis quoted the paper’s editorial board in 1960, when it similarly explained that the paper wouldn’t be endorsing a presidential candidate.

The Biden administration has considered creating a new “information czar” for national security to combat foreign disinformation operations about elections and other issues, according to White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
Asked about creating such a post on the National Security Council on Thursday, Mr. Sullivan said the idea has been a topic of debate throughout the intelligence and defense agencies.

Lancaster County officials announced an investigation Friday after election workers found some 2,500 voter applications they suspect are fraudulent.
Two batches of applications were dropped off last minute at the county elections office to meet Pennsylvania’s Oct. 21 voter-registration deadline, officials reported at a Friday news conference.
District Attorney Heather Adams said investigators found problems with 60% of the voter-registration forms they’ve reviewed so far, including incorrect addresses, false identification information, false names and names that don’t match Social Security information.
“Staff noticed that numerous applications appeared to have the same handwriting [and] were filled out on the same day,” Adams said.
