Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas and the architect of the Palestinian militant group’s Oct. 7, 2023, brutal rampage across southern Israel, has been killed in a raid in the Gaza Strip, Israel said Thursday. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz confirmed the reports Thursday afternoon in Jerusalem, citing DNA tests taken after the operation. Israel military officials earlier in the day said that it was “highly likely” that Mr. Sinwar, the lead target in Israel’s military incursion into Gaza, was dead. Mr. Katz hailed the news as a “military and moral achievement for the Israeli army.” Hamas, which is closely allied to Iran, did not issue a statement

CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten said Friday on “News Central” that Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign has “stalled” while former President Donald Trump is “more popular” compared to 2016 and 2020.
Enten said, “If you believe Donald Trump has somehow become less popular over time, let me change your mind about that. In fact, he is more popular at this point in the campaign than he was at this point in the 2020 campaign or the 2016 campaign.”
He continued, “I think there’s this real question in. Kamala Harris’s mind, in the campaign’s mind, why is Trump more popular now than he was at this point in 2020 and 2016?.
Democrat Senate candidates in key swing states are pleading to Trump voters for support – a bad sign for their own campaigns and a flashing warning sign to Kamala Harris.
In Michigan, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) is openly courting voters who support Trump. In Pennsylvania, Sen. Bob Casey’s (D-PA) campaign released an ad showing Donald Trump signing a bill in the Oval Office, with the narrator touting Casey sided with Trump on his historic trade deal ending NAFTA. And in Wisconsin, leftwing Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s (D-WI) campaign released an ad broadcasting her alignment with Trump on trade policies.
Candidates on the ground often have a better sense
Al Smith, the beloved four-term governor of New York, was the first Catholic to appear on a major party ballot for president.
The 1928 presidential campaign was marred by the Herbert Hoover organization unleashing a wave of anti-Catholic bigotry, aided by the Klu Klux Klan and other nativist groups, that accused Smith of being an agent of the papacy and hence the devil himself. Protestant preachers railed against him from the pulpit. Even mainstream protestant churches warned against Smith's "dual loyalties."
The Smith campaign was such a disaster that neither major party would put up a Catholic candidate for thirty years, when Democrats nominated John F. Kennedy.

President Trump appeared at the Al Smith Dinner in New York yesterday. The New York Post covered his appearance here, Fox News here. I have posted the video of his speech at the bottom. The video posted by C-SPAN includes Jim Gaffigan’s introduction (C-SPAN video posted on YouTube here).
Harris herself was absent from the dinner. She appeared only by video. Cardinal Dolan was unforgiving in his comments on her absence. He was disappointed and and he didn’t hide his disappointment. He’s quoted in both the Post and the Fox News stories. If she wins, we will have to pray for him.
