Memphis, Tennessee, once known for its blues, soul and rock 'n' roll music, has now turned into a haven for crime and drug abuse.
A study by WalletHub has named the Southern city the most dangerous city to live in America among the 182 cities surveyed.
The United States Department of Justice also declared that this once-flourishing metro has the highest number of homicides - 129 in the first half of 2024.
Apart from this, 167 rapes, 1,028 robberies and 3,763 incidents of aggravated assault were reported in the first half of 2024 in Memphis.
This cultural hotspot also has a crime rate of 98 incidents per 1,000 residents

Memphis has had a serious crime problem for 30+ years. A friend was a Memphis cop in the 80s and reported that it was "a mean city". He was one of the responding officers when Elvis died. He said that that scene was really ugly, too.
At least you can be armed for your own protection when there.

Visited about a year ago, mostly to visit Graceland but also stopped by The Lorraine Hotel (rundown neighborhood).
Beale Street was a joke.
Yes, the money people have ignored Memphis for decades and looks like it went to Nashville.

Memphis is been the butt end of Tennessee. It has also been run by Democrats for decades. It is NOT underserved. It has been served and served and served by "The Great Society", hence it's problems. The issue is also not racism. Of the last 8 mayors in over 40 years, 5 have been black. The city council has a majority of not only black councilmembers but black women as councilmembers, Memphis is a cesspool of corruption, graft, and criminality dating back a century. Going to Memphis used to be a treat. It is sad my youngest will never see the Peabody ducks. But now Memphis is just dangerous.

Memphis has been deadly for decades. It's what happens to young black boys when the Federal government acts as their "other parent" in broken black families. It's also at a critical crossroads (literally) for "trafficking" in all manner of contraband and prohibited items, luring many young men into lives of crime and gang activities.

Best BBQ I ever ate was at Marlowe’s in Memphis. Walked around Beale St and had some crazy guy harassing us but luckily there was a cop who noticed it and chased him off.

Memphis born here. After mom passed away in 2019, have no desire to go there. Very few good pockets left. Always try to get thru there before dark when traveling.

Memphis, far from a musical wonderland, has been a rough town for a long time. But take fathers out of family homes, teach the young to hate and promise that some bureaucrat somewhere is the answer to all of life’s problems and you get the smoldering heap that is too many of today’s American cities. I believe the biggest answer to the problem right now is in the form of young men of character, of every race, who will shake off the shackles of the government plantation and lead the way out of the destructive morass for everyone.

Whenever I hear statements about 'most dangerous' or 'highest crime rate', I go to heyjackass.com, check out Chicongo, and learn where it's really dangerous!

I lived in Memphis from 1997 to 2003. Even back then there were no-go areas like Orange Mound, but the Cordova/Germantown area on the east side of town where I lived was considered safe. Haven't been back down there in about 15 years so don't know what the area is like now, but suspect there are still sections that are safe while the bad areas have just gotten worse.

And they continue to elect Democrats Paul Young as Mayor and Steve Cohen as US Representative to keep Memphis exactly the way that it is.

The problem with Memphis is young black males (including young teenagers). Memphis hired a police chief that was fired from Atlanta. There is no leadership from the city or proper male models for the fatherless kids.

Visited Memphis in 2019, mainly to go to Graceland. We stayed in a very nice hotel on the outskirts of town, right on the river. We did spend one evening on Beale St, going to the clubs, my very favorite music. We didn't personally have any problems but it was a very rough city. At about 7PM all the sirens started, police cars and ambulances. We were in New Orleans about 2 yrs previous and I felt more unsafe there than Memphis. Stayed 2 nights in the French Quarter and then found another hotel for the rest of our stay. Horrible.

As #16 mentioned, New Orleans might be worse. My son took his wedding trip there some 10 years ago. They toured one of the cemeteries but couldn't go to the others due to their proximity to certain neighborhoods. We are going to a wedding in Lafayette in a few months. Hope it's' OK.

#13 - I began hearing the music some time ago. I mute my speakers. Also, you can get rid of the solitaire game by clicking the "X" box in the upper right-hand corner.
Memphis is being Memphis. It has always been a rough town from its founding because it was a transportation hub. Most cities are the same. Read the newspapers from 100, 150, 200 years ago and you'll see the same stories about crime and the "underclasses". The moderns thought "technology" would solve all problems. They made them worse by kicking God out of society, fathers out of families, and parents out of schools. They even kicked logic out of thinking.
Their biggest mistake was their hubris and turning away from God. While we do all suffer under the repercussions of our elite's mistakes, out of the morass has come a leader for our people in the most surprising package of Donald J. Trump. The times they are a-changing. Evil never prospers for long. America's Third Great Awakening is upon us.

Not sure I trust this ranking since cities like New York and Chicago no longer report their crime stats to the FBI let alone call crimes a crime in the first place.

#13, I access Lucianne most often on my iPhone. Starting around a week or so ago I was startled to hear instructions about solitaire playing. I found that it was something called Adipolo popping up on the home page and each articles' comment pages. I now scroll down a bit each time I open the page and press the X to get rid of Adipolo. When on my PC the same occurs except that the Adipolo popups, so far, have been muted. Previously on the iPhone an Adipolo popup appeared that was just visual with no sound. A few days ago while on my PC I did hear a very soft babble that ceased when I closed all Lucianne pages. I've looked up Adipolo and have found no way to get rid of it.

Poster #17- Enjoy your time in Lafayette! I worked in the oil industry there for 30+ years and never felt afraid. As an added bonus, enjoy the food in Lafayette and the surrounding small towns, it's better than anything you'd find in New Orleans and I live very close to New Orleans.

The article quoted 'professionals' who say the problem is economic, and the community is 'underserved'. So are many small cities without rampant murders. I can't figure it out!
