Walmart, Target, and Albertsons alongside other grocery giants are all making a big change to their stores in California.
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law banning plastic bags being used at such stores in the state.
The change will take legal effect on January 1, 2026, and will affect all grocery stores. Some grocery chains such as Whole Foods have already phased out plastic bags at their checkouts nationwide.
Consumers will be encouraged to bring their own bags to do their shopping, and those who do not will be offered a paper alternative.
The new law will only affect the plastic bags

Grab your bacteria laden personal grocery bag and head to the market and don't forget your Covid mask.

In Idaho we still get to use plastic bags. I repurpose them often and always store them in a another plastic bag. The local store has a recycling bin, so that is where they go when the storing bag is full. What's the problem?

We have a small basket that we keep the plastic bags from the grocery store saved. Handy for all sorts of things and they get reused.

The stores put one or two items in plastic bags, so now we outside Crazifornia are supposed to believe they care about preserving whatever. I prefer my own bags just because I can't stand throwing plastic bags away, and I end up with too many darn plastic bags. No more plastic bags! Hat tip "Mommie Dearest."

Colorado has had a plastic bag ban since January 1, 2024. The law here goes California one better - Paper bags will be banned January 1, 2025. And of course, the almost nonexistent Colorado Republican party went right along with it.

My late sister lived in one of these U-dope-ias that outlawed plastic bags at the store. When she visited me here in Florida, we went to Costco, where she bought a box of 1000 plastic shopping bags. She took them with her grocery shopping for meals and other messy perishable items. Easy peasy solution. BTW, these bags are also available on Amazon.

I actually prefer the old paper bags. They easily folded up. Fit inside of your average kitchen trash can. Made a great fire starter and was biodegradable.
And trees. Yeah. Trees is a cash crop in the south.

Aldi's has been selling the bags for decades......to save money and keep the prices low.
For there, I just take some tote bags with me. When the bags get gross, I throw them out.

Yes #9. Shouldn't trees be considered 'recyclable'? Asking for a friend.

Before plastic bags came about, where were the material(s) that made up the plastic bags? Oh........ that's right, they were in the ground.

demand the clerk carry out all the groceries to your car
and place them in correct order in the trunk..
shouldn't take more than fifteen minutes...
no tips, either..

#5: you would deny people who like and resuse plastic bags because you don't like them? You can always use your own bags.

Yeah, I remember when our bleach-blonde elitist betters shamed us for using paper bags and destroying the trees. Elitists, are you happy now?
#9, I also prefer paper bags, except stored paper bags seem to be the preferred home of the South's other crop - cockroaches.

You beat me to it, #16.
I am old enough to remember when paper bags were the problem and plastic bags were the solution.

Poster 15, please read my comments. I wrote, "I PREFER my own bags just because I can't stand throwing plastic bags away, and I end up with too many darn plastic bags." I have no power to deny anyone the use of plastic bags; frankly, I don't give a flip what people use. I stated my opinions about and experiences with plastic bags. Notice I didn't write that I don't use plastic bags. Geesh! Focus.

Thought is was going to be about self-scan checkouts. Our Walmart went total self-scan last year. I don't get over there much. I was in there last Wednesday, and half the lines were back to registers with employees. Ran into an acquaintance while there, and she said an article in the local paper said theft was through the roof. Cameras or no cameras, rotate the barcode on your item to the wrong side, appear to swipe, then get half your stuff for free. Brilliant!
