According to reports, the University of Washington has rescinded its tentative offer of a Div. 1 women’s volleyball scholarship to a California transgender athlete after being blindsided by revelations that the athlete was born a male. Last week, it was reported that Tate Drageset, a 16-year-old California high school junior, had verbally committed to the UW Volleyball program and was preparing to offer the teen one of only 12 female Division 1 athletic scholarships.

I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year even though, as 2023 draws to a close, it seems that “the whole world is festering in unhappy souls,” to quote the brilliant Tom Lehrer. I know at times it seems unlikely that 2024 will be better than this one has been, but there are some reasons for optimism. I credit independent journalism, Elon Musk with his fight for free speech on the internet, and the truism that eventually reality bites for my belief that the West may be wising up to the toxic mix of Islamism, traditional anti-Semitism, and Communism.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed a measure Friday that would have banned gender-affirming care for minors and transgender athletes’ participation in girls and women’s sports, in a break from members of his party who championed the legislation.
GOP lawmakers hold enough seats to override DeWine’s veto, but if or when they would do so was not immediately clear. Both within and between chambers, Republican legislators have not been in lockstep this year.
In a news conference Friday, DeWine said he had listened to people on both sides of the legislation who “truly believe their position best protects children.”

Morgane Oger, a transgender woman, was given a Meritorious Service Medal by Canadian Governor-General Mary Simon on December 7. Vancouver City Council in March 2019 pulled its CAN$34,000 a year grant from 2020 unless the shelter, the oldest in Canada that began in 1974, changed its policy.
Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden posted Christmas greetings, but they declined to mention the reason for the season, the baby Jesus. Instead, they gave generic greetings and in Biden's case, nonsensical ones.
