The FBI and other federal agents burst into the wrong Boston hotel room Tuesday night during a training exercise, startling the guest inside who had no idea what was going on as he was handcuffed. The incident occurred on the 15th floor of the Revere Hotel as agents were conducting a mock investigation. FBI agents were assisting the U.S. Department of Defense in a training exercise inside the hotel to simulate a situation that DOD personnel might encounter in a deployed environment.

I can tell you that my second phone call after the Keystone Cops left my hotel room would be to a good lawyer to sue the FBI's pants off. The first would be to corporate to tell them why I wasn't able to take my flight the next day because I was too agitated and exhausted. Can you imagine how frightening that episode was to that poor man? Woken up out of a sound sleep, handcuffed and thrown in the shower, interrogated for close to an hour and who knows what else. I doubt we've gotten the entire story of what those thugs did to him.

No one at the FBI checked before hand about the occupancy of that room? No one at the hotel told the FBI that the room was occupied by a guest? No unoccupied floor of the hotel was designated for this exercise? Did anyone do due diligence? Someone in charge of this at the FBI either needs to be fired or demoted. Lawsuits will follow and the FBI and hotel isn't going to win.

The Czech novelist Milan Kundera published The Joke, his first novel, in 1967. It traces the fortunes of Ludvik, a young student, after his politically correct girlfriend shows the Communist authorities a postcard he had written to her as a joke: “Optimism is the opium of the people! A healthy atmosphere stinks of stupidity! Long live Trotsky! Ludvik.” As a result of this whimsy, Ludvik finds himself expelled from the Communist Party, the university, and is eventually conscripted to work in the mines. That’s the way things are in totalitarian societies. No jokes allowed, especially not jokes told at the expense of the regime.
