The mayor of Miami Beach wants to cancel Spring Break as footage emerged of the moment a man was shot dead on a sidewalk during another wild weekend of partying. 'We haven’t asked for spring break in our city. We don’t want spring break in our city. It’s too rowdy, brings too much disorder and is simply too difficult to police,' said Democratic mayor Dan Gelber. The chaotic weekend saw two men shot dead and partygoers jumping on a car, brawling in streets and even trashing a slushie shop on the main drag despite the city instituting a curfew on Sunday night. Footage showed the horrifying moment

Comments:

My mother cancelled St Pat's Days at our house because the famlies McGuiniss, McCarthy, and O'Reilly always loused up the party with their hooliganism. Now I know what she meant. And it's not even Juneteef yet.( June 16th)

FTA: “The victim immediately fell to the ground and later died after being rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital.” Thanks to the foreign press for that detail, following the preceding paragraph that he was shot three times. Otherwise I would’ve had to surmise. But yes, Miami is off my list, along with chicago, Washington (state and dc) etc.

South beach went from a skidrow/flop house, wino infested slum to an upscale "Fashion Capitol of the world" nearly all of the spring catalog photos were shot there(back when clothing stores had catalogs) It was wall to wall models and photogs. Because of the restored art deco/neuveau buildings, white sand, blue water, mature palms....then it transitioned to the most "Gay" place in Eastern America. How it became Black Spring Break central...where most of the rowdy crowds are not even college students is a shame...and a crime. If I recall correctly it is because Myrtle Beach kicked them all out. (I did the restoration plans/scope of work/contractor liaison for several of the old hotels there, back in the 80's)

One of the cool things was...there was a "Camera ready Cars" place where you could rent nearly ANY car that was ever made, from classic european, american, super cars, custom hotrods, motorcycles, by the hour, half day, all day...cruise the Blvd. Have coffee or cocktails on the terrace of any number of different hotels, watch the never ending parade of "Beautiful People". It's gotten ugly.

Last year the big problem was these groups going into restaurants, running up sky-high bills and walking out. They’d dare the staff to stop them. I think the restaurants finally started making these people give them a credit card before ordering. I wonder which college Dontavius and his crew hail from?

I don't think that mayor has any authority to cancel spring break. The universities have been giving students an Easter break for many years and never had to ask a city mayor for permission.

The pictures accompanying the article make Miami Beach look like a VFW convention. Veterans of Foreign Wars? No, very few whites. Many in the multitude were carrying guns--at least seventy have been confiscated in the last three weeks--which do not mix well with alcohol. About ten years ago some gangbangers from Tampa came over to Clearwater Beach during spring break and engaged in a gunfight. The Marriott Hotel 's north wall had chunks missing, knocked loose by bullets. Clearwater police were all over it, and made it clear that they would not tolerate any gang activity in this popular beach community. Since then, Clearwater Beach has been free of gang violence. The cops must deal resolutely with gangs, which are the source of more than half of murders in America. Perhaps we have reached the point of constructing gigantic prisons and filling them with gangbangers. In El Salvador that's exactly what's happening: violent criminals are being swept off the streets and locked away. The country is much safer for it.

We used to go to Myrtle Beach every Spring. I always called the place we stayed to ask if it was Black Bike Week. I was told when it was and also that a lot of the Stores closed down that week due to Heavy Theft. One has to wonder WHY someone going to Spring Break had a Gun. They should have simply spent their Spring Break in Chicago if they were looking for someone to Shoot! Leave the "College Kids" alone!

Spring Break at Virginia Beach, VA got ruined by the usual suspects. As for South Beach, I can remember visiting it with a friend from Ft. Lauderdale for antique shows, etc back around 1980 or so and although on the decline I wouldn't quite call it wino/flop house slum. Some excellent Cuban restaurants and of course, the Art Deco buildings.
