Shocking footage has revealed the moment a South Carolina student was 'slammed against a wall' and screamed at by her teacher for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
The parents of Marissa Barnwell, 15, have launched a lawsuit following the episode, which erupted on the ninth-grader's birthday last November.
The incident occurred at River Bluff High School in Lexington, where honor roll student Barnwell claims she was accosted while quietly walking to class. She says her teacher, named Nicole Livingstone, became enraged after seeing the 15-year-old had not stood still as the pledge rang out across the campus' intercom system.
'I was just in disbelief,' said Barnwell

If these twits don't like the USA then just go to a country they do like and let us honor the country we love without jerks like these bothering us.

That student and her family have rushed to grab the narrative makes me think there is more to this story.

I can understand the frustration of this teacher, but touching a student like that (if this is true) is never OK for any reason.
2 wrongs don't make a right, and this was two people definitely wrong!!!

I find this difficult to believe. I can't imagine a public school teacher in this day and age that would allow the Pledge to be spoken, much less attacking a student for not saying it.

Worked in the public school system for 31 years. Worked in 4 different schools. Said the pledge every morning. If a student did not want to say the pledge it was their choice. We only asked that they sat quietly while it was being recited by those who chose to participate. There were a few, mainly middle school students, who did not say the pledge but I never had any problems with them being disruptive.

IIRC (no fun to look it up) the Supreme Court settled this around 1943. Students do not have to say the Pledge.

When I supervised teacher education students in schools I always reminded them that neither they nor any child could be coerced into saying the Pledge. I insisted that they be respectful of the parents who want their children to recite the Pledge and told them that it was not their place to try to influence the children. Of course now our students are being actively recruited to be political activists, and rewarded for the same. So very sad.

I was not about "not saying the pledge"...it was about not stopping and remaining respectfully in place while everyone else did. The girl has been in that school system for her entire life, knows the rules. When the announcement comes on, everyone stops what they are doing, remains in place until it ends.
Basically...she blew through a stop sign in a school zone.

At 15 she's in the 9th grade; isn't it normal to be 14 at most? An honor student? These days of never letting the kids be disappointed, isn't everyone on the honor roll? Another reason to get kids education anywhere but from the government. Letting your kid go there is child abuse.

You are a student and a MINOR, kiddo... you do what the school says, or get ejected, period.

If she wanted to be a Kaperdick so be it. Her parents not raising her any better then they have, now that’s the embarrassment.

There is more to this story than reported. Either she was being disruotive and/or disrespectful - probably at parent's instigation.

I went to school with in the 60's and 70's. Even then, the pledge was "optional" we were however expected to not be disruptive. In my teens, I would not say the pledge, simply because my allegiance belongs to G-d and not a piece of cloth. I will say the pledge when it's, in my opinion. appropriate. I.e, joining the military.
So.....Don't assume that anyone not saying the pledge hates the country or is unpatriotic.
That said, there is more to this story.

Ohhh... Poor little black girl. She is inspired by her idol Kaepernick apparently. Maybe she would be happier in Sudan or Nigeria.

Former teacher: Its mostly some blacks, Mexicans, and stoners that don't stand for the pledge, and most teachers cut them no slack when grading their work.

My wife has been teaching for a long time. If a student does not wish to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance, they are left alone. It is considered voluntary, not compulsory. A few do sit it out, unfortunately, but no additional attention is given to them.
