Annually around 14000 gun homicides can be compared to over quarter of a million cases where the use or threat of use of a firearm prevented death or injury. The latter are regularly suppressed rarely reported.

In the old west, when there were people living in a place where there were no functioning law enforcement or courts, the good people of the communities would, often after suffering grievous harm at the hands of criminal bands, form Committees of Vigilance. These varied from ad hoc groups formed on the spur of the moment which were functionally very little different from lynch mobs, to highly organized groups which produced judges, juries and law enforcement officers and whose processes were sometimes close approximations of the full legal system. Read about the Committee of Vigilance formed in San Francisco....two separate times. In the 1851, lawlessness was rampant and the good people had enough. The second time, they had over 6,000 prominent citizens on the Committee, and they did a lot of good. Quite different than the destructive crazies in charge of San Fran these days. Perhaps this may happen again. But the old saying is "History doesn't repeat, but sometimes it rhymes." With no police protection and violent criminals turned loose immediately after arrest, people must recognize that THEY are their own first responders. Only the ambulance will be coming, well after any chance of intervening in violent events.

Everything #2 writes is worth absorbing. Criminals who depend on guns to carry out their lawlessness will never be disarmed by any gun control laws, which affect only the law abiding. This article stresses that some places like Chicago price their citizens out of obtaining carry licenses by requiring $400 fees. That should be unconstitutional. The best--and sometimes only--defense against an attacker with a gun is a gun in the hands of a "friendly," prepared to take a deadly attacker out with a defensive shot to the K5 ring. My former neighbor who is a Florida Highway Patrolman with more than a decade's experience convinced me that the only one responsible for my moment to moment safety is I, me, myself. By the time the police arrive either I or my attackers will be dead. But they'll draw a nice chalk line around the decedents nonetheless. My policeman neighbor convinced me that I'm responsible for my life. So should everyone be.

Re #4, several police officer friends and a neighbor of 35 years who is now a retired cop have given me the same info, starting in the 90s. Good people have their limits, and ultimately are responsible for themselves and their loved ones.

CHICAGO - In a letter sent out this week by the Chicago Audubon Society, the environmental consulting organization says it plans to drop "Audubon" from its name and is encouraging the National Audubon Society to do the same. (Snip) "Carrying John James Audubon’s name does not serve us well ethically," the organization said, calling out the naturalist’s ties to a genocidal campaign waged against people of color. The organization argued that Audubon had no role to play in the discovery of nation’s natural resources but merely described them for mostly white audiences.

The Illinois Department of Human Services is preparing to move 658 recent migrant arrivals into a former Kmart in Chicago for temporary shelter, WTTW News has learned. The 100,000-square-foot store has sat vacant at the corner of 71st Street and Pulaski Road on the city’s Southwest Side since 2016. Sources said the migrants — mostly asylum seekers — will be relocated from the suburbs, where they are currently staying at hotels. According to documents WTTW News obtained, the site was selected because of its nearby resources and because it is in a welcoming neighborhood. But some local officials are not yet ready to roll out the welcome mat.

Lawyers for Dakotah filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago Thursday morning naming Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Supt. David Brown as liable parities in the shooting. Dakotah has had 13 surgeries since the violent armed robbery on May 6, 2022, near the DePaul campus in the 1300 block of West Webster Avenue. Much of 24-year-old Colin Johnson’s savings account was drained by thieves who used a popular banking app to do the damage; one that is now under fire by lawmakers. The revelation that President Biden had stacks of classified documents stashed in his garage — alongside jugs of anti-freeze and piles of cleaning rags — comes as little surprise. For several years I have been working on a new book, “SpyFail,” that examines the collapse of the country’s counterintelligence and security operations. And by far, no administration has had a more disastrous record than those of Barack Obama and Biden. For years, insiders at the hyper-secret National Security Agency were able to walk out the door with more than half a billion pages of documents classified higher than top secret, some dealing with nuclear weapons

Social Security and Medicare are on an “unsustainable course” and will run out of funds by 2037. That’s the conclusion reached by the General Accountability Office (GAO) and the Social Security Administration. There is no saving these programs without massive changes. And demagoguing the issue, as Joe Biden and the Democrats are doing, only delays the day of reckoning. To pretend these programs don’t need intervention now — right now — is to play with dynamite. The sooner we can get started, the less pain will be inflicted on senior citizens. Pain there will be. In order to put these programs on the path to long-term viability, it will take political courage

The New Georgia Project, a minority-focused democracy advocacy group founded in 2013, was run by Nse Ufot, hand-picked by Abrams, until she was fired in October. The group filed its 2021 Form 990 financial disclosure three months later, when the form was two months overdue, an investigation by the Washington Free Beacon found. The group reported a $533,846 consulting payment and $67,500 grant to an obscure charity called the Black Male Initiative, run by Ufot's brother.
