The Memphis Police Department Saturday announced that it has "permanently deactivated" its SCORPION unit, one day after the release of shocking video which showed the violent arrest of Tyre Nichols earlier this month. All five former officers involved in Nichols' arrest, who have since been charged with second-degree murder in his death, were part of that unit.
The decision came after Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis met with members of the unit Saturday "to discuss the path forward for the department and the community in the aftermath of the tragic death of Tyre Nichols," police said in a statement.

Here's the Paul Harvey on the five officers, for what it's worth. From a LI post:
"According to a source within the Memphis PD, the 5 charged officers weren’t hired through the usual structured PD hiring process. City leaders felt the existing process was too strict and kept certain people from getting jobs at the department. City leaders began their own hiring process and then pushed new hires into the agency, bypassing the testing procedures in place at the department. You can read between the lines what that all means.
All 5 of the charged officers were hired by the City, and didn’t go through the rigorous PD testing process.
This is what quota hiring looks like. Lawsuits and dead innocents. The city should pay the lawsuits instead of the Police department. This Murder wasn’t created by old school policing or by “white supremacy”. This murder was directly facilitated by liberal policy."

Sounds like the City of Memphis that was being racked by violent crime, moved outside the normal procedures used to hire police officers, and ended up hiring what amounts to Black populated street gangs in order to get more members of “the community” into police uniforms.

Everybody knows what happened. Why did it happen? Why would 5 policepersons decide to beat a guy to death over a traffic violation? Why would 5 guys be used for a traffic ticket? None of this makes any sense.

They've all been hired by the Capitol Police.

This "Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods" was a PD gang bomb with a lit fuse. Other such PD groups had the same result. Criminal acts against minorities. Re Louisville. This past week in Memphis, the Memphis PD Gang Bomb went off. Blame the PD hierarchy for creating such a unit. Don't blame racism. Blame the type of policing and the police gang that committed the murder.

Cops all over are quitting or retiring, so this is what happens when you are desperate for replacements. It is going to get worse.

Liberal knee-jerk reaction. Fire the police chief first, she obviously is responsible and had the wrong people supervising the unit. Get a good leader and make it work the way it is supposed to. There, fixed it.

So let me get this straight.
They gave improperly vetted street hoods badges and weapons and tasked them to clash with street gangs on there own terms. Including hoodies.
So these "cops" treated the criminals as rival gangs and assassinated one. That we know of. I would not be surprised to find a nascent criminal enterprise taking root in the special unit .

Looks like it’s back to normal in inner city Memphis, quickly got rid of their official street level gang units, thus again essentially allowing the unofficial street level gangs to run amuck. Too bad an apparently innocent guy had to give his life to bring the inner-city back to normal.

I am waiting for a definition of "SCORPION unit". Is that a group of Thugs with police uniforms that harass then beat, then MURDER innocent Citizens...because they can?

This cop gang unit looks like the offensive line of an NFL team. You mean to tell me they couldn’t legally subdue a skinny man who weighed under 200 pounds? Why was Nichols stopped? I read that there was personal beef with him and one of the officers. I primarily blame leftist policies like defunding the police and the adject disrespect of the police in general. That lead to mass retirements and outright quitting of good men and women cops. Which lead to a large reduction which lead to lax hiring practices. That’s why we get people like the “NFL offensive line” as cops. This will get worse especially in democrat controlled major cities before it gets better.
