The transformation of New College of Florida being ushered in by Gov. Ron DeSantis got off to a contentious start Wednesday when two controversial new board members addressed the college community for the first time in a meeting that nearly was canceled because of a death threat, and featured frequent heckling and pointed questions from the audience.
Board members Christopher Rufo and Eddie Speir fielded questions Wednesday morning from a packed crowd of roughly 200 people at the Mildred Sainer Music and Arts Pavilion, their first public appearance on the college’s Sarasota campus.
Rufo said college administrators wanted to cancel the event

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz formally announced Wednesday that after weeks of stalling and frustrating negotiations Berlin has agreed to send two battalions of Leopard 2 A6 tanks to Ukraine.
In a statement the government said it would initially send one company of 14 tanks to Kyiv, though its aim is to send up to 88 tanks from its own stockpiles.
Scholz said, "This decision follows our well-known line of supporting Ukraine to the best of our ability. We are acting in a closely coordinated manner internationally." Some 15 other EU nations that possess the German-made tanks in their own stocks and had increased the pressure on Berlin

Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida spoke in desperate terms about the country’s cratering birth rate in an address to his nation’s parliament on Monday.
“Now or never when it comes to policies regarding births and child-rearing-it is an issue that simply cannot wait any longer,” Prime Minister Kishida said in a speech marking the new parliamentary session. “The number of births dropped below 800,000 last year.”
“Japan is standing on the verge of whether we can continue to function as a society,” he added.
For perspective, Japan experienced nearly 2 million births per year throughout the 1970s.

Newly minted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing his first major test since winning the contentious battle for the position.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democrat House Minority Leader, has reappointed Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell to the Intelligence Committee. That comes after McCarthy vowed to keep the two rabid partisans, both of which abused their positions under Nancy Pelosi’s rule, on the sidelines. Jeffries seems content to push the issue, though, setting up a clash that will no doubt be very public. Here’s a bit of what Jeffries wrote to McCarthy, per The Washington Examiner. To call it shameless is an understatement.

The Washington Post began firing staffers Tuesday as the Jeff Bezos-owned broadsheet suffers declines in advertising revenue and readership, the paper announced.
The company is expected to lay off 20 journalists and not fill another 30 vacancies, leading to a sigh of relief from those at the venerable paper who were fearing a more major blood-letting. The culling of the 2,500-person staff comes weeks after publisher Fred Ryan announced the impending layoffs. Ryan vowed Tuesday the paper’s head count will remain the same or higher by the end of 2023, the outlet reported. The Washington Post Guild, the union representing staffers, blasted the layoffs.

After weeks of discussion, the Biden administration is preparing to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine, according to three senior U.S. officials.
The administration may announce the decision as early as Wednesday. The current plan includes a couple dozen Abrams tanks, but the officials stressed that the decision is not yet final and could change. The tanks would not be available to the Ukrainians immediately. It will take many months before the high-tech vehicles arrive on the ground in Ukraine, the officials said, and the training for Ukrainian troops is also expected to take several months.
The tanks would be paid for through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative,

Lawyers for former Vice President Mike Pence said a "small number" of classified documents were found at his home in Indiana last week.
Pence's lawyers notified the National Archives and Records Administration of the discovery on Wednesday, according to a letter obtained by CNBC. The classified documents were first discovered on Jan. 16 after Pence had outside counsel "with experience in handling classified documents" search his own home and records "out of an abundance of caution" following the news that classified documents were found at President Joe Biden's home and office.
Gregory Jacob, an attorney at O'Melveny tasked with handling Pence's records, said the Justice Department sent FBI agents to Pence's home

Several senior Ukrainian officials have resigned as President Volodymyr Zelensky begins a shake-up of personnel across his government.
A top adviser, four deputy ministers and five regional governors left their posts on Tuesday.
Their departures come as Ukraine launches a broad anti-corruption drive.
Recently, authorities have seen bribery claims, reports of officials buying food at inflated prices and one figure accused of living a lavish lifestyle. Senior aide Mykhailo Podolyak said Mr Zelensky was responding to a "key public demand" that justice should apply to everyone.

Charles McGonigal, a retired counterintelligence investigator from the FBI’s New York Field Office, was just arrested because he allegedly took substantial sums of money from Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire, to get the latter off a U.S. sanctions list. Where this goes beyond the ordinary corruption that periodically crops up among people with too much power, too few morals, and too little accountability is that McGonigal was one of the people investigating Trump over the Russia Hoax, while Deripaska employed Christopher Steele, whose false dossier seeded the Russia Hoax.
Anyone who paid attention during the “hot” years of the Russia Hoax recognizes Deripaska’s name.

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) advisory panel on vaccines is set to consider an annual schedule for the coronavirus vaccine, akin to how flu vaccines are administered, when it meets this week.
The FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) will meet Thursday to discuss how to simplify and streamline the COVID-19 vaccination process, including the composition of coronavirus vaccines and the recommended scheduling for these shots. The rapid evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, resulting in variants with an improved ability to escape immune protection, means that “periodically updating the composition of COVID-19 vaccines as needed,” as was done with the updated bivalent booster
