Visiting the Pantheon, one of Rome’s premier tourist sites, it’s hard not be humbled by the knowledge that this building has lasted 1900 years and still stands as the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome (snip) Yet for all our scientific and technical sophistication, Roman concrete resisted cracking and eventually crumbling far better than ours. Now, as MIT News reports, scientists from MIT, Harvard, and 2 European research institutes have discovered the secret to Rome’s concrete recipe. We may finally be ending the Dark Ages for concrete

What was once thought of as the trash in the mix turns out to be the key ingredient for its lasting effect. This will change the mix design in structures for centuries to come. This is HUGE. No more crumbling bridges and highways.

Excellent. This kind of stuff always makes my husband and myself roll our eyes when modern know nothings talk about ancient people as if they were primitive savages and we so superior in every way. The ancients created wonders that still stand firm today without benefit of electricity/gas powered engines (or even the wheel in some cases), computer aided engineering, massive steel infrastructures, or industrial level production.

The Pozzuali Amphitheatre was only a thirty minute drive from where we lived when I was in college. I went many times with my brother, roaming the amazingly intact underground portions, where animal cages could still be seen, albeit the fro t iron bars long gone. This amphitheatre was covered by the eruption of a nearby volcano, and that ash was used for much stronger concrete. So modern, high strength concrete uses fly ash from coal fired powerplants to substantially increase the strength of the concrete for special applications. I haven't heard whether it increases durability. Another interesting fact on the Pantheon dome is that the lower third uses ordinary rock aggregates, the middle third uses tuffa, a lighter volcanic stone for aggregates. The topthird of the dome concrete uses ultra light pumice as the aggregate. Modern calculations show that this variable aggregate density is an important factor in the long survival of the dome.

Yeah, right. I didn't know that Harvard had concrete research facilities. I've been underwhelmed by ivy league engineering research before, including some other big name universities. These few researchers wouldn't be the first to propose imaginary mechanisms based on a little microscopy and chemical analysis. They have to write papers, you know.

Scott McLaughlin said, "I'm f------ killing that b----." After doing just that, he came back covered in Beverly Guenther's blood. When he led the police to his ex-girlfriend's body, they found her naked from the chest down, with her bra stained red with her own blood. McLaughlin admitted to stabbing Guenther. Over and over again. (snip) because he eventually claimed to be a woman, feminists pleaded with authorities to spare his her his life. In 2021, Disney greenlit Strange World, an animated movie about a family journeying through a mysterious land to save a resource that’s losing its energy. Bob Iger, who is returning to Disney to “save” it from Bob Chapek’s sad tenure, was still on board in 2021, so he must have greenlit it. That’s a relevant fact because the movie bombed at the box office. Coincidentally or not, the movie has an openly gay subtext as one of the main male characters crushes on another boy. Before the movie opened, the media wanted audiences to know about the gay romance, probably under the mistaken belief that audiences would care:

A big problem Democrats and the complicit media have when it comes to the discovery of classified documents in President Joe Biden’s former office at a Washington think tank is that they set the precedent with their response to former President Donald Trump allegedly possessing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home. Another problem they have little interest in is that the documents were at a “Chinese-funded” think tank, according to Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. It was on the latter note that Trump had plenty to say, with the media quick to dismiss his assertions as “wild speculation” — the odd thing about Trump’s speculations is that, over time,

President Joe Biden announced the repayment plan in August, but it was overshadowed by his sweeping plan to slash or eliminate student debt for 40 million Americans. Despite the low profile of the payment plan, however, some education experts see it as a more powerful tool to make college affordable, especially for those with lower incomes.
