On Thursday, doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center gave an update on the medical condition of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Hamlin is reportedly responsive physically and neurologically and is communicating with doctors via writing since he cannot speak while intubated.
According to reports, Hamlin asked doctors, “Did we win?”
“Yes, Damar. You won. You’ve won the game of life,” a doctor told him. [Video]
According to Sports Illustrated, “There is no timetable for a return to football, but they are hoping to get the breathing tube out soon and send him further down ‘the road to recovery.'”

I hope this young man is wheeled out of the hospital, stands up and takes a bow to a thunderous ovation from medical workers, coaches, teammates and fans.

Aw. Made me tear up. The game might not have been won, or lost, but this young man is a 100% winner. Hope he makes a full recovery.

#1 said what my first reaction was. It was seeming like a life of severe brain damage was what was most likely.
Glad to be wrong.
Best wishes to Mr. Hamlin, although I had never heard of him before his trauma.

Good news! From everything I've read, he is a fine young man with a kind heart. May he make a full recovery and then go out on the field and play to win.

Damar, you lost. The NFL made you take an experimental drug which has now destroyed your career. I hope you can accept your new role as the NFL Chief of Communications, or whatever they give you.

God answered prayers. Remember both teams got on their knees and prayed for him. Even a ESPN talking head prayed for his recovery on air. Prayers were said all over the country and were answered. Let's hear someone on TV admit that. After all, they often poopoo prayers to a God they say doesn't exist yet they all said "Pray for him". Interesting. Now I say give God credit for helping those doctors and first responders save him. God bless America!!

If Hamlin emerges from this relatively unscathed a huge amount of the credit should go to the team trainers/medics who were on the scene immediately and did exactly the right things until the ambulance arrived. Their response is what probably saved his life.

The Bills won, the Bengals won the fans won and above all Damar won big time!
Given the environment where the responders handle what are dire emergencies to the general public but rather common if not routine in their work, for them to have so quickly recognized the severity and acted so properly is damned impressive. I'll have to get me a hat to take off to them.

I wonder if the doctors pulled a two-foot plug from his artery and not say anything.

Allow me to point out some incongrities
on NFL decision making.
There are several games a year where the player is carried off the field and taken directly to a hospital. Yet in none of those cases, was the game terminated, muchleass erased from the schedule.
Canceling the game, erasing the results, in
the new era of sports betting, should make
everyone suspicious of NFL decision making.

If you want to watch an uplifting news conference, watch the one from yesterday with Bills HC Sean McDermott and QB Josh Allen. It can be found on the Bills website.

Amen, OP! This is truly miraculous. Our prayers should continue because he has a long way to go and needs them.
I thought that those 9 minutes of being without a heartbeat would mean that, even if he survived, brain damage would be extensive. I’m thrilled to have been wrong.

Sorry, Damar. The NFL chickened out and canceled your game after you collapsed. Frankly surprised they did that considering how many players are carted off the field on a weekly basis.
Good luck on your recovery, sir!

When I saw the players from both teams packing around their fallen colleague and praying together, I regained a great deal of respect for NFL players. The priorities of these athletes, sportsmen, are in order. They play the game hard, but if the worst happens, they are all together, as they should be. Add my prayers to everyone else's that Damar Hamlin will continue to improve and make a full recovery. Although the situation was about as bad as it could have been, these players are human beings before they are athletes, and my faith in humanity has been strengthened. Good on you, guys! Keep praying for Damar.

One other point: After the trauma of Hamlin's situation, I don't see how any player could have gone right back out onto the playing field. If I had been a player, I wouldn't have been able to refocus on the game the same day. No way. Besides, it's just a game. Make it up in a couple of weeks.

Damar doesn’t know it yet, but he will be remembered as the last man in recorded history who was able to unite Americans.

#20 Because of the extra week of games scheduled there is no room to make up this game.
