Florida iguanas likely to fall from trees
as Arctic chill sweeps Christmas weekend

Forecasters in Florida are warning of falling iguanas as an Arctic cold front sweeping across the US will likely bring a “hard freeze” to parts of the Sunshine State on Christmas weekend. Temperatures in Northeast Florida may dip into the low 20s inland and near 30 along the coast, the National Weather Service in Jacksonville said Monday. The cold-blooded lizards start to get sluggish when temperatures fall below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. As temperatures drop lower, iguanas become stiff, with those perching in trees often falling to the ground. While the low temperatures stun the invasive reptiles, the iguanas won’t necessarily die. That means many will wake up as temperatures rise.

Comments:

It's an especially invasive species when it falls on you head after freezing, going numb, and letting go of the branch it was resting on. Cyclist Lance Armstrong, before he got caught cheating, once had a resting pulse rate of 32. Being cold blooded, these non-indigenous lizards might get down to two beats per minute before gravity takes effect and they plunge to terra firma. It's always something weird happening in South Florida.

Below the article is a funny story about some enterprising fellow who was collecting the semiconscious lizards as they lay on their backs, cold-stunned. (Apparently, the lizards are edible, their skins can be tanned for leather, and since they're invasive, wildlife officials want them culled.) The lizard collector tossed them into the back of his van, and headed home in the cold. His van had a heater, and when the inside of the van got warm enough, the lizards started coming alive. How could he drive? They were crawling all over everywhere.

35 years ago a friend of mine kept monitor and iguana lizards at his house in St. Pete. Fl. They were always escaping. Some times he found them, sometimes not. These things are not native and should be killed when found in the wild.

A newly popular sport in Central and South Florida is iguana hunting with air rifles (see video below). For instance, here are some successful hunters using a dog to retrieve the lizards that fall into the water after being hit with the pellet, whether .177 (Daisy) or .20, .22, .25, .357, .457, or .50 (in some of the more expensive air rifles). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iLKEFM29NI

When I lived in Ghana, my gardener used to cook lizards in a big pot outside; he said they were good chop (food). The lizards were everywhere, and they were multicolored, beautiful, but freakin' scary and the size of squirrels. They were as scared of us as we, let me speak for me, as I was of them. Encountering each other around a corner sent both of us scurrying for safety. My daughter who was three to four years old loved to imitate how they raised and lowered their upper bodies. My Marine husband used to shoot the geckos (at my request) off the cement walls of our home with my son's BB gun. The barrel was slightly bent, but Marines know how to improvise. My Marine was an air winger with a little bit of grunt in him, and he was an expert marksman (back then all Marines had to be). He was also an aeronautical engineer, and he never missed hitting those pesky little geckos who insisted on living inside instead of outside--their natural habitat.

Kill every one you see. Air rifles are the common weapon. An invasive species. If they fall, kill them.

There are so many it is a plague. The state encourages killing them. If you see one that has fallen from a tree beware that it is likely not dead and will revive as it warms up. Do what is necessary to make sure it doesn't.

It's all fun and games until a falling iguana breaks somebody's neck. Someone else posted about lizards the size squirrels; iguanas get bigger than that. Florida reports average weight of 15 pounds. That's like being hit by a falling bowling ball.

I lived next to an open sewer in Kuala Lumpur. The iguanas there get way bigger than 15 pounds. There was one outside the gate of my home. I had to get out of my car to open the gate since it was not electronic. I tried to shoo it away, but it didn't budge. So I ran to the gate opened it, jumped in my car and back out to close the gate once inside. I've never liked anything snake-like, and I can't stand it when people tell me not to kill the garden snakes because they eat rats. My grandfather used to say the only snake is a dead snake, and he was a real farmer almost all his life. Doggone snakes will come into your house too. Doggone devils!

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Amid death threats and sudden global infamy, accused FTX fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried and his parents have turned their posh Stanford home into a heavily guarded fortress. The family is shelling out roughly $10,000 a week to have a private Bay Area security firm patrol the leafy, 3,000-square-foot residence with several armed guards working around the clock, sources told The Post. “They’re nervous,” one source said. “There have been death threats. They’re not taking any chances.” Bankman-Fried threw cryptocurrency into chaos with the collapse of his FTX exchange, which came amid federal prosecutors investigating his alleged illegal use of investors’ money to prop up his Alameda hedge fund.

Pondering the end of the world turns out to be a 21st century preoccupation. Doomsday has never seemed nearer than now. “Polls conducted in 2012 across 20 countries found over 14% of people believe the world will end in their lifetime … The general public believed the likeliest cause would be nuclear war, while experts thought it would be artificial intelligence. Only 3% of Britons thought the end would be caused by the Last Judgement. People who proclaim they ‘trust the science’ are especially sunk in gloom. A year ago today, Joe and Jill Biden did a video call into NORAD to see where Santa is and to speak with kids before Christmas. One particular call remains the most memorable exchange from this historical event. “I hope you have a wonderful Christmas,” Biden told the father of the children at the end of the call. “I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas as well,” he replied. “Merry Christmas and Let’s go, Brandon.” “Let’s go, Brandon. I agree,” Biden said in response. The video still makes me laugh. [Video] It still seems unlikely that Joe Biden’s handlers have kept him so safe that he didn’t know what “Let’s go, Brandon” meant.
