With a winter storm bearing down on the Midwest, Triple A has some advice for motorists, including drivers of electric vehicles.
(snip) keep an emergency kit in your car. It should include items like your cell phone, jumper cables, food, water, blankets, hats and kitty litter or sand in case you get stuck in snow (snip). for owners of electric vehicles, says Molly Hart, spokesperson for AAA, (snip) cold weather decreases your driving range almost by half.
“When it dips to 20 degrees and the HVAC system is being used to heat the inside of the vehicle, the average driving range is decreased by 41 percent,”

There is nothing good about EV's. Maybe if you live in a town or city where everything is nearby but for the hundreds of millions of the rest of us. they are not feasible. They are not reliable. They catch fire and burn forever. And the creepy part to me is they are too quiet. No engine noise. But that might just be me.

My iPad is old and its Lithium battery only lasts for 2 hours now. Wonder about old EV batteries.

Stuck in traffic in sub zero weather ? Because other electric cars ahead of you have gone dead ?
Can't wait for the next hurricane evacuation. Bring extra food and water.

Extreme temperatures have negative impacts on batteries. I knew that in grade school.
I should apply for a job in our Department of Energy since I seem to know more than they do.

I live in Erie County, Pennsylvania, where lots of things - and people - wear out early because of the cold weather.
Is it fair to assume that the EV batteries in Erie will also have shorter lives?

Oh wait... Nobody thought of this before forcing all of us to drive nothing but EVs?
When do the public hangings start?

No Worries! AlGorical's Globull Warming will surely begin before all the EVs.... stop, right? After all, in 1995 he stated we only have ten years before the heat consumes us, and all the snow too.

Good grief! How do people not know this from regular car battery experiences? Who hasn't been reminded to get your battery checked before winter because it won't crank as efficiently in the cold weather and you could be stranded? These people are idiots.

"That means instead of getting 100 miles of combined urban and highway driving, the range at 20 degrees would be reduced to 59 miles." I wonder how many miles you can get when the temp is minus 15.

In the winter of 2010/11, hubby and I rented a car and drove all over southern England and Wales for our 30th anniversary. We heard a couple of reporters on the radio recounting their experimental drive from London to Edinburgh in an EV. They either had to stop every couple of hours to recharge the car or go without heat in the dead of winter. A trip which takes about 3 1/2 hours by train took them 3 days.

Well, goll-ee. Those of us with old fashioned gas cars knew that our batteries were less powerful in the cold. Did scientists and politicians not know this, or were they just keeping it from the public?

I have a hybrid sedan. Good car but as soon as I pay it off I am going to get rid of it. The batteries are going out of warranty at the same time. I don't want to have to replace them at an average cost of eighteen thousand dollars. Great car though. I get fifty one miles per gallon around town and forty five on the highway. Great performance also. At lights people see the hybrid badge and think this thing is a dog. They do get a surprise when the light changes.

What there also saying is a heat pump won’t work so your switching to electrical resistance heat. There is nothing in this world that consumes more electricity that resistance heat.

We drove out to our remote Colorado vacation home on Wed pm and Thursday morning. We were just ahead of the huge slug of cold air as we headed west, then southwest on Wed, having only traces of snow at the early part, then overcast, foggy and 32 F. By dinner time we had broken out into blue skies just as the sun went down, at 32F. But...heading west to our hotel in eastern Colorado, temps rapidly dropped, 32F to 19F in a 20 miles of driving, and down to 5F by the time we stopped, less than 2 hrs of driving, plagued by severe blowing dust, and lots of tumbleweeds. In the morning, we were chatting with another person at the breakfast area, and he pointed out at a semi-truck outside the window. His truck, stuck because the mechanics at his company didn't properly treat his fuel, and it gelled overnight, making starting impossible.
Folks with these silly electric vehicles won't do well trying to travel in winter. Diesels have pretty easy methods to deal with the cold, and yet still get stuck. We saw a VW SUV cryptically marked "ID.4" on the back as we left the Topeka area westbound on the interstate. A look online showed it was the latest new wonder golf cart from VW, blasting down I-70 westbound at 32F and 80 mph. I kept visual contact with the vehicle for about 100 miles....and then it was gone, never saw it again that day. VW claims 275 mile range....but I'll bet that at 80 mph and at 32F temp, the range is around half of that and after 100 miles, the owner was looking for a charging station.....to wait at. The online specs say the battery is 58 kwh capacity. So, if you find a Level 2 EV charger you can charge at 7.2 kw. So, over 2 hours, you'll put in 14.4 kwh....or 25% of the range. Two hours charging will get you 69 miles range.....if you believe the VW numbers. If that is substantially reduced by cold and cruising at high speeds......maybe more like 35-40 miles range for 2 hrs charging.
I assume that there are some high output charging stations.....I really haven't (and don't intend to) studied the whole range of charging levels available.
But, unlike our acquaintance with the diesel truck, their cold and "can't drive" problems are not temporary, or easily fixed. They towed his tractor to a nearby heated service facility, where it will quickly warm up and the fuel will be treated with additives, and he'll be on his way after losing half a day due to an error.
The EV owners will be permanently stuck with a very expensive, short ranged vehicle where you refill the "fuel tank" with tablespoon. Fun, fun, fun....as long as you don't actually need to go somewhere.
Our gasoline vehicle drove over 400 miles per tank, and refilled in about 5-6 minutes, back to go 400+ more miles.
Keep your expensive, PITA electric jokes.
