NASA's uncrewed Orion capsule hurtled through space on Sunday on the final return leg of its voyage around the moon and back, winding up the inaugural mission of the Artemis lunar program 50 years to the day after Apollo's final moon landing. (Photo) The gumdrop-shaped Orion capsule, carrying a simulated crew of three mannequins wired with sensors, was due to parachute into the Pacific at 9:39 a.m. PST (1739 GMT) near Guadalupe Island, off Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Orion was nearing the end of its 25-day mission less than a week after passing about 79 miles (127 km) above the moon in a lunar fly-by and about two weeks after reaching

Congrats NASA. You just accomplished the same feat that your grandparents pulled off decades ago with much less technology.

Half a century ago we did this all with a slide rule, calculus and trigonometry tables. We also did it with real men who were competent and scoffed at diversity quotas. Ability was the name of the game.

In yet another new twist, Orion is programmed to employ a novel "skip entry" descent in which the capsule briefly dips into the top of the atmosphere, flies back out and re-enters - a braking maneuver... This is impressive. I remember learning about the importance of the re-entry angle as a kid - too steep and you burn up, too shallow and you bounce off the atmosphere and begin your trip to the next galaxy. Based solely on the headline, the cynist in me was initially going to post that the first Apollo flight to orbit the moon was manned (so what are we afraid of this time, right?), but I would not want to be in that capsule for this little experiment.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is fast emerging as a top 2024 presidential contender capable of beating both Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, an early election poll suggested on Tuesday.  The new USA Today/Suffolk University survey shows that a majority of GOP voters want Trump to pass the torch to the 44-year-old Republican governor - despite having declared his own third White House campaign last month. And while the ex-president trails Biden in a theoretical head-to-head rematch, DeSantis holds a narrow lead over the Democrat of about four points.

Grab the popcorn, it’s getting hot between former CIA head John Brennan and Twitter owner Elon Musk. As we reported, Brennan was infuriated that Musk dared to criticize Dr. Anthony Fauci, saying that his “pronouns” were “Prosecute/Fauci.” But he continued that meltdown with a new tweet saying there needed to be a way to “prevent” people like Musk from being “politically destructive.”(Tweets) “Good people in democracies need a more effective way to prevent attention-craving, emotionally immature, & highly devious individuals, esp those of means, from being socially, culturally, & politically destructive,” Brennan declared. “We certainly seem to have far too many of them lately.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) visited the U.S.-Mexico border on Monday and blamed Republicans for the ongoing crisis there, despite the fact that the ongoing influx is a reaction to President Joe Biden’s policies. Millions of migrants have poured across the border since Biden was elected president, many of them traveling from around the world to take advantage of the Democrats’ deliberately lax policies. Earlier this week, 1,000 migrants crossed the Rio Grande at El Paso in one night, an unprecedented number. Biden, who told migrants to “surge” to the border during his campaign in 2019, halted President Donald Trump’s border wall project upon taking office,

Released Saturday, the next installment of the “Twitter Files” details how, after years of resisting calls to ban then-President Donald Trump, Twitter purposefully changed its policies after the Jan. 6th riot to justify permanently banning the then-president. The installment begins with journalist Michael Shellenberger noting that on Jan. 7, senior Twitter executives “create justifications to ban Trump… seek a change of policy for Trump alone, distinct from other political leaders… [and] express no concern for the free speech or democracy implications of a ban.”(Tweets) The installment shows that following the Jan. 6th riot, a number of high-profile voices — including former first lady Michelle Obama

The disclosures, given to former New York Times writer Bari Weiss, reveal that members of Twitter’s Trust & Safety department did not believe that the former President violated any rules on the day that he was banned, only for this determination to be overruled following an intervention by arch-progressive Vijaya Gadde.
